The good news for the Orlando Magic is that they’re going home. The bad
news is that the Pistons are joining them. The Pistons might be more
comfortable at home, but that also explains why they’re perhaps more competent
on the road.

“The thing about it when you go on the road,” Tayshaun Prince said,
“it’s us against everybody else. You go out there and that’s how you
play. With the guys we have, when you hear the boos and you hear the
negative things about (Rasheed Wallace) and myself and whoever, it maybe
gives you the extra boost to go out there and try to get the win.”

than homerecord – not only embrace challenge, they sometimes appear to
seek it out. Witness Rasheed Wallace’s audacious playoff guarantees
that guarantee nothing quite so much as ensuring the further incitement
of a hostile road crowd.

“It’s a mind-set,” Pistons coach Flip Saunders said after Tuesday’s
light practice the morning after his team completed holding serve at
home, taking a 2-0 lead over Orlando in their first-round playoff series
with the scene now shifting to Florida for Game 3 on Thursday. “It’s
a challenge.

Perhaps the first inkling that this group of Pistons had the rare stuff
it takes to win critical road games came – fittingly enough –in Orlando.
It was four years ago in Game 6 after Orlando had taken a 3-1 lead in the
first-round series – remember Tracy McGrady prematurely admitting how excited
he was to get to the second roundfor the first time in his career? – before
losing Game 5 at The Palace.

The Pistons went into Orlando and smacked the Magic around, winning by
15, before coming home to crush them again in Game 7.

There have been other memorable playoff road wins since, of course,
perhaps none bigger than Game 6 at New Jersey in 2004’s second round.
Down 3-2 after losing an epic triple-overtime game at home two nights
earlier, the Pistons spotted the Nets a big early lead but came back to
win on clutch hoops by Rasheed Wallace and Rip Hamilton in the final minute.

There were also games 2 and 5 wins at Indiana that spring, the
unforgettable Game 1 cuffing of the Los Angeles Lakers that led to the
”five-game sweep” and the unexpected 2004 NBA title, the Game 7 win
at Miami in 2005 for a return trip to the NBA Finals and the Game 6
win at Cleveland a year ago with their backs to the wall.

2003 Eastern Conference finals, the first season as Pistons for him,
Prince and Chauncey Billups.

“What hurt us so much was when we first got here and got swept by
New Jersey, lost every game at New Jersey, and we told ourselves in the

little sick feeling we had that year, we ended up getting better.”

When Saunders gets analytical, he’ll point to such things as the
Pistons avoiding turnovers – which often lead to transition dunks that
fuel a home crowd– and making free throws as critical elements of their
road success. But at the base of it is an unflappability and a swagger
that defines this team.

we like to have challenges like going on the road and playing.”
