AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Pistons won the first NBA title in franchise history
18 years ago – the year Flip Saunders made the leap from college assistant
coach to pro head coach. CBA, not NBA. But he wasn’t so busy coaching the
Rapid City Thrillers that he had no time for the NBA playoffs. So he remembers
when the Pistons-Bulls rivalry reached its crescendo as the Bad Boys and
Michael Jordan played out a thrust-and-parry course over four consecutive
postseasons starting in 1988.

“It was war – one word,” Saunders said Tuesday as the Pistons got back to
work following a two-day break in the wake of their first-round sweep of
Orlando with a second-round series against the Bulls ahead. “When they played,
it was a competitive war. Both teams played really hard and with a great amount
of energy and enthusiasm.”

in the salary-cap era to produce a rivalry of similar longevity, but there are
certain obvious similarities.

challenge for Saunders and the Pistons will be to hold them off as adroitly as
Chuck Daly and his troops did in eliminating the Bulls from the playoffs in
three consecutive seasons before Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson broke
through for the first of their six NBA titles in 1991.

Chauncey Billups was 11 when the Pistons beat the Bulls in the 1988 playoffs
and 14 by the time Chicago knocked off the two-time defending NBA champions in
1991, but his recollections reveal a future point guard’s ability to quickly
and accurately size up a situation.

In fact, they’re more like the current Pistons team than the old Bulls.

“We’re very similar in some areas,” Saunders said. “Our perimeters: They

UConn and both can score. And the point guards (Chauncey Billups and Kirk
Hinrich) are two guys that played in the Big 12 and both have the ability to
defend and both can shoot from the perimeter.”

There’s also the shared history both teams have with Ben Wallace, of course,
which figures to remain a storyline at least up until tipoff of Game 1 at The
Palace – sometime over the weekend, most likely, but not pinned down until the
fate of other first-round series comes more sharply into focus.

One other prominent storyline beyond the revival of an old rivalry and the
reunion of Ben Wallace with his former teammates will be the effects of an
unusually long layoff for both teams. The Pistons, who clinched at Orlando on
Saturday, will have been off for at least a week; the Bulls swept Miami on
Sunday.
這個系列賽除了是經典戰役重現及班蛙和他的前隊友再次碰面外，另一個引人注意的話

Everybody was back at practice for the Pistons on Tuesday, though Rip Hamilton
left early after getting hit in the eye with a basketball. The injury was not
serious.
