‧ Bulls-Pistons series scouting report | Series page
The challenge for Bulls coach Scott Skiles now: Be more sports psychologist
than basketball coach. His team has been pulverized to the extreme, and
turning things around seems almost impossible. In eight quarters of
basketball against Detroit, Chicago has won just one quarter, and that by
just one point.
This Detroit team, the one that is playing with focus and hunger, is a
powerful front-runner due to its balance and ballhandlers. And with solid
leads so far, the Pistons have been able to rest their big men and allow the
bench guys to come in and play with little pressure on them.
For the Bulls to change their karma, Skiles will look to the first quarter of
Game 3 and a wild home crowd. Skiles recognizes that he must give his team
something to feel good about, a solid foundation to build on. Winning the
first quarter would give them their first lead after a quarter -- any quarter
-- in the series. So instead of saving any plays or defensive strategies for
the latter parts of the game, look for them early on. He'll be more willing
to call timeouts, too -- no use saving them for an end-game situation that
may not materialize, considering the two blowouts in Detroit.
The Bulls might apply token full-court pressure, as they did on occasion in
the first two games, not to force turnovers as much as throw off Detroit's
rhythm and slow the Pistons' entry into their offense. Detroit has done an
excellent job of posting guys in transition, so look for Chicago to front
those post-ups -- this requires excellent transition effort to get the help
defenders in position behind the fronted post player to prevent lob passes to
the rim. Detroit will then have open perimeter looks, but that is what the
Bulls want the Pistons to settle for.
Webber had an easy time scoring one-on-one in the post, so the Bulls will
surround and dig or double him again. Forcing Detroit to a perimeter game is
key.
Changing from man to zone, trapping ball screens, denying players at the
3-point line instead of just inside of it -- these are all things we have
seen Detroit do on defense, throwing Chicago's offense out of whack. It's
time for the Bulls to do the same. They can't count on their solid but
"vanilla" defense, which has been terribly ineffective so far.
Offensively for the Bulls, one recipe for success will be more Luol Deng. He
only had 12 shots in Game 2. However, he is as much to blame as his
teammates. Though he can score on Tayshaun Prince, Deng must take advantage
of every scoring opportunity when not guarded by Prince. His teammates should
look for him, but he must not just call for the ball, he must demand it.
Chicago's offense actually looked better in the second half of Game 2, moving
the ball fast and smart and finding guys in the short corner repeatedly. But
those players must finish shots or get fouled -- finishing with strength is
key.
Detroit's extended denials have hurt Chicago, so look for them to open up the
post more and start looking for back cuts. Hitting the pinch post and then
going backdoor will work, too.
Tyrus Thomas found himself, in a big way, in Game 2. Now Andres Nocioni must
do the same; his confidence has been shaken, but a return home may get him
going.
Chicago must not let Detroit get another big early lead. The Bulls will need
to pierce the Pistons' rising confidence by winning more 50-50 balls and
beating them down the floor in transition. And maybe delivering a hard foul
or two as well. Skiles will have his guys spitting blood, and the home crowd
will spur their team to a better performance in Game 3, especially on the
shooting front.
PREDICTION: Chicago wins Game 3
