"Last year, we were in Flip's car going down to Cleveland," Wilson says. "He
always takes a nap; I always drive. I said, 'You know what's really good about
our team? I can't even tell you -- and I don't think you can -- what each of
our guys is scoring per game. They don't seem to care, and we don't seem to
care. I think that's key for us.'

Asked about the influence he has played in Saunders' career, Wilson refuses any
credit with a wave of his hand.

On his job as Saunders' special assistant, Wilson says: "I told Joe (Dumars)
and John Hammond one time, 'If I would have sent you my resume, you would have
put a coffee cup on it and mailed it back to me.'

After playing for Musselman at Ashland, Wilson became an assistant coach on
Musselman's staff in 1971 at the University of Minnesota.

The Pistons use a type of match-up zone defense that Musselman mastered to turn
Ashland into one of the top defensive teams in the country in the late 1960s.
It was called the "hyperbolic, paraboloid, transitional, floating defensive
zone." Wilson said the system actually was the brainchild of Ray Mears, who
coached Musselman at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Mears later
coached at the University of Tennessee in 1963-1977.

Wilson.

In 1973, Wilson and Saunders officially reconnected at Minnesota, though, by
then, they already had been part of each other's life.

Wilson, who was the best man in Greg Saunders' wedding, was at Walter and Kay
Saunders' house so often when he was in college, Kay started referring to

When Wilson came down with food poisoning on a recruiting trip to Cleveland --
when Flip Saunders was still in high school -- he bunked in Flip's room to
recover.

In 1973, Saunders was Ohio's Class A player of the year after averaging a
state-high 32 points per game at Cuyahoga Heights. At Wilson's urging,
Musselman turned his attention to Saunders after losing Adrian Dantley in a
recruiting battle with Notre Dame.

he was a little on the small side.

"Bill said at first, 'Let's just get the guy as a walk-on and not use a
scholarship for him,' " Wilson recalled. "I said, 'I think he can run our

Saunders, who also was considering Maryland, chose Minnesota for one reason:
Wilson.

Asked why, Saunders said: "Because ever since I was 12 years old, he was almost
like a brother, and I was just so comfortable with him. I trusted him and I
believed in what he was telling me, that he would give me every opportunity to
try to have success while he was there."

That summer, in 1973, Wilson received a letter in the mail. Addressed to "Coach
K," it said, in part: "There is one promise I want to make you, and that is I
will work 200% for you and Coach."

It was signed simply, "Flip" -- the 'i' in his name dotted with a drawing of a
basketball.
