with a month-by-month review, starting with training camp and concluding with
the Eastern Conference finals, which the Pistons reached for the fifth straight
season. Part I: October.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – There were three overriding objectives and one
underlying theme when the Pistons convened training camp last October. The
goals were to assimilate newcomer Nazr Mohammed into a lineup still anchored by
four familiar holdovers, develop a bench that would relieve those holdovers of
excessive wear and implement a zone defense for which their personnel seemed
especially well-suited.

Joe Dumars digested the previous season’s disappointing finish – the six-game
loss to Miami in the conference finals after the most successful regular season
in franchise history – and concluded that it was essential to cut back the
demands on the four teammates Wallace left behind: guards Chauncey Billups and
Rip Hamilton and forwards Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace.

Detroit – Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter – the Pistons appeared a deeper
and more versatile team.

They would have to be, of course, because they no longer had Big Ben anchoring
their defense for 40 minutes a night. And that would mean changes.

The Pistons accepted that they were going to be a different team without their
original Wallace, who took an overwhelming offer from the Chicago Bulls – four

– mostly because Ben Wallace sneered at the possibility.

who could stick the open jump shot, get his share of rebounds and do a
creditable job defensively.

The real revelation of training camp was Maxiell, who emerged as an effective
defender and rebounder at his best stirring things up around the rim and
outrunning slower opponents in transition to force scoring chances. Maxiell
shot more free throws in preseason than anyone in the NBA, getting to the line
10 times a game. Saunders frequently cited Maxiell as the team’s top
frontcourt performer throughout camp. And Carlos Delfino looked a more
confident player after a successful summer with the Argentine national team.

it’s nice. We’re giving other guys opportunities and they’re taking

About midway through camp, the NBA’s supervisor of officials, Ronnie Nunn,
stopped by the practice facility on his rounds of all 30 teams to talk to the
Pistons about officiating points of emphasis for the season. The big one was
the crackdown on player behavior – dubbed the “zero-tolerance” policy by the
media, a label the NBA strongly rejected.

three of their goals. They still weren’t quite sure how much they’d miss Ben
Wallace, but they had their eyes opened to that soon enough. And they’d also
learn that if the NBA’s tolerance wasn’t quite zero, it was close enough.
