with a month-by-month review, starting with training camp and concluding with
the Eastern Conference finals, which the Pistons reached for the fifth

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – By the standards of the rigorous NBA schedule,
February was practically a vacation for the Pistons. They would play only 11
games. Saddled with a league-high 22 back-to-back game situations, the
Pistons would have to play on consecutive nights only once in February. And
the schedule-maker handed them only three road games for the month – two of
them short hops to Cleveland and Milwaukee, the third a winter migration like
many Michiganders make, to Orlando.

So the Pistons looked to fatten up in February and take command of the
Eastern Conference, starting with consecutive games to open the month against
division rivals Milwaukee and Cleveland.

The Cleveland game was one that grabbed the attention of a battle-tested team
that lived for such challenges. It would come on Super Bowl Sunday before a
national television audience with media star LeBron James driving ABC’s hype
for the game. It had all the trappings, in other words, to bring out the best
in the Pistons.

And so it did. The Pistons were at their surgical, methodical best in
dominating the Cavs wire to wire, winning every quarter of the game,
suffocating Cleveland defensively, executing offensively every time the home
team appeared ready to inch back into the game. The team that liked to say it
had six starters – Antonio McDyess had been sizzling since the NBA brought
back the old leather basketball to replace the composite substitute on Jan. 1
– placed all six of them in double figures in winning 90-78 to put three
games in the loss column between them at the Cavs.

That win was Detroit’s third straight, and they would tack on four more to
the list – the Celtics, the Lakers, the Raptors and the Clippers – before
stumbling at The Palace on Valentine’s Day in the All-Star break getaway
game.

The Pistons had been 11-2 with Chris Webber in the starting lineup before the
Spurs game, both losses in narrow decisions to a very hot Washington team. A
year after sending four players to the All-Star game, the Pistons settled for
two this time – guards Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton – and they picked
up after the break pretty much where they left off, the San Antonio loss
aside. The Pistons closed the month with four straight wins, including a
memorable finale when Ben Wallace made his much-anticipated return to The
Palace after signing with Chicago as a free agent the previous summer.

It was another stage perfectly set for the Pistons, but this time they kept
stumbling over their lines – until one of the understudies came in and made
everything right.

Jason Maxiell, a player the Pistons’ front office had quietly suggested
resembled Wallace for his toughness and hustle and swagger, entered the game

ball. Ben Gordon hit a jumper 12 seconds later to push the lead to 16, but
with Maxiell wreaking havoc around the rim and proving a general nuisance to
anything in red and white, the Pistons outscored Chicago 20-6 over the
remainder of the quarter to climb back within two.

It was also the perfect way for February to roll out.
