AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The momentum the Pistons carried out of their red-hot
February ran into the brick wall of March. They knew it would be a cruel
month since the previous summer, when the just-released schedule jumped off
the page at them: 17 games squeezed into 29 days, 11 of them on the road,
five sets of back-to-back games and one brutal West Coast trip.

Coming off a 10-1 February, the Pistons hoped to make hay early in March
before embarking on their five-game Western road swing. If there was a soft
part to the schedule, this was it.

The month began with the Pistons going to Miami – but the defending NBA
champions were reeling, having just lost superstar Dwyane Wade to a
dislocated shoulder that would require off-season surgery.

But the Pistons, playing without an injured Rasheed Wallace, spotted the Heat
a 22-point lead, came all the way back to go ahead by three points, then
wilted and lost 85-82. They struggled mightily one night later to beat 15-45
Memphis, then came home and suffered arguably their worst loss of the season
– a 111-93 crushing at the hands of Golden State, which came to The Palace
with a 26-35 record.

Things would look even more bleak two nights later when the Pistons got hit
with the news that veteran Lindsey Hunter had tested positive for an illegal
substance – while sitting out with an injured Achilles tendon, he’d taken
one of his wife’s prescription diet pills, which contained a diuretic – and
would serve a 10-game suspension.

The Hunter news coincided with a visit to The Palace by Cleveland, which had
lost twice soundly in Cleveland to the Pistons in the teams’ only meetings
to date. But the Cavs got 41 points from LeBron James and handed the reeling
Pistons a 101-97 overtime loss. Now they were faced with heading out the next
day to face Denver, the Clippers, Seattle, Portland and Phoenix in a murderer
’s row of a trip.

The season seemed to hang in the balance. Typically enough, the Pistons
rubbed their hands and welcomed the challenge.

“Coaches like taking teams on the road,” Flip Saunders said. “When you go
on the road, it’s basically your team and that’s it. You don’t have any
distractions. You’re basically going to be together. Now, at the end, you

else. You can find out a lot of things. Even when you don’t win, you can
find things out and it can be a positive.”

The Pistons not only survived their five-game trip, they came home the
hottest team in the league – winning all five games by the stunning average
of 13.8 points. The most shocking win of all came in the finale, when the
Pistons crushed the 50-14 Phoenix Suns 105-83 on a night Chauncey Billups was
limited to 13 minutes by a minor leg injury.

The grind caught up to them some, however, as the Pistons had to tip off
against Dallas back home, three time zones away, barely 36 hours after the
Phoenix game ended. They lost that game, then dropped back-to-back games with
Western powers Houston and San Antonio later in the week.

Wallace provided one of the season’s memorable moments in a March 26 home
game against Denver when he banked in a 62-footer as time expired in
regulation to send the game into overtime, where eight more Wallace points
produced a 113-109 victory at a point in the season the Pistons were trying
to hold off Cleveland and Chicago in the Eastern Conference standings.

Compounding the physical toll March took on the Pistons was a barrage of
mysterious flu bugs and other infections that tore through the roster,
hitting Rip Hamilton and Chris Webber especially hard. Hamilton would miss
the last four games of the month and Webber two, but the Pistons emerged from
their toughest stretch of the season – one that saw them lose players to
injury, illness and suspension – with a 10-7 record. More critically, they
were still atop the Eastern Conference.
