AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – It seemed fated from the moment Ben Wallace put his name
on a Chicago Bulls contract last July, leaving behind the franchise he’d come
to represent in all its blue-collar machismo: Big Ben’s old team and his new
team would inevitably collide in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Pistons respected the Bulls. Chicago had won three of the four
regular-season meetings, though the Pistons had been without Billups for the

viable force without the man who’d won an NBA title at their side.

There was one other storyline weaving its way through the week of waiting. It
was the first playoff pairing of these teams since the Bad Boys and Michael
Jordan had competed fiercely nearly two decades earlier. But Joe Dumars
pointedly refused to air the past.

with the four core starters – Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and
Rasheed Wallace – accounting for 77 points.

Caron Butler – in a first-round walkover. The Cavs then beat New Jersey, a
huge disappointment all season, in a six-game second-round series.

That early March game would prove a bit of ominous foreshadowing as the curtain
descended upon May.
