AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Life after Ben Wallace looked like a cold, desolate
existence based on early returns. In their first game without the man who
anchored their defense – at its peak, the most feared in the NBA – for six
seasons, the Pistons got cannibalized by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Milwaukee, which didn’t exactly come into the season as everyone’s darkhorse

league was serious about its off-season initiative to crack down on player

The Pistons won on the road two nights later in Boston, came home to beat
Memphis the next night and them embarked on their first extended road trip of
the season – a four-game trek that began on a Monday night in Utah and then
took them up, down and back up the California coast for games with Sacramento,
the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State.

The Pistons played well but lost at the buzzer in Utah when Rip Hamilton’s
tying layup attempt was blocked, got blown out in Sacramento, routed the Lakers
on a night their zone defense showed its first signs of being a viable weapon,
and got crushed at Golden State to close the trip.

It wasn’t a great start – 3-4 – but it wasn’t a disaster, either.

That happened in their next game – back home at The Palace, against a New
Orleans Hornets team that arrived without its two starting big men, Tyson
Chandler and David West. Playing with a lineup of unknowns that included
Brandon Bass and rookies Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons, the Hornets
embarrassed the Pistons even more than Milwaukee had in the opener.

From there, the Pistons would close November with seven consecutive wins,
including back-to-back victories over potent Washington and Houston teams at

of bumps in the road ahead, but at least they hadn’t gotten left in the pits.
