AUBURN HILLS -- Somewhere inside the Dallas Mavericks' American Airlines Arena,
you'll find the remains of the Detroit Pistons' 37-point drubbing (119-82)
Saturday night.

Whatever lingering affects such a loss could have on the Pistons (8-1) were
immediately washed away after the game, and replaced with a renewed focus to
start another winning streak against Denver on Wednesday.

Pistons coach Flip Saunders knew the team was going to lose at some point.

The Mavericks played an excellent game, but there were several factors that
helped their cause.

For starters, the Pistons were coming off a hard-fought 78-70 win at Houston
just 24 hours earlier, while the Mavericks hadn't played since Thursday, when
they easily defeated the winless Atlanta Hawks, 87-78.

Also, Pistons center Ben Wallace was bothered by a right foot injury sustained
in Houston, which limited his effectiveness against the Mavericks. He had six
points and just four rebounds as Saunders kept him on the bench for the fourth
quarter. The game was out of reach then and Saunders didn't want to risk making
Wallace's injury worse.

the reality of what happened.

"When you get down to it, they played good and we didn't," Wallace said. "It's
that simple."

The loss was disappointing, but the Pistons have never been a team to dwell on
any one game. Instead, they tend to look at the big picture -- and that shows
eight wins in their first nine games, with five (of a possible six) coming on

points in just seven minutes.

On a night when Saunders struggled to find anything positive about his team's
performance, Maxiell's play was a bright spot.

Saunders won't go so far as to say that Maxiell's effort will result in more

"It's a thing that goes into your file cabinet," Saunders said.
