Poor shooting the cause of McDyess' early struggles this season

命中率差導致 Dice 球季前段的掙扎

AUBURN HILLS -- This isn't the first time Antonio McDyess has struggled
to begin a season. However, he understands that the situation now is, well,
different than those of the past.

Left knee injuries in the past led McDyess down an early season road
of uncertainty -- were the injuries behind him, or just waiting to re-appear?

Poor shooting seems to be the biggest hurdle for McDyess
to overcome this season.

"I'm just not making shots," McDyess said recently. "It's really that simple."

While the Pistons' fortunes have certainly improved from a year ago --
they have a 10-2 record compared to 6-6 last season --
the same cannot be said for McDyess' production.

After the first 12 games of last season, McDyess was averaging 8.8 points
and 7.6 rebounds per game in 26.8 minutes per game,
while shooting 50.6 percent from the field.
This season, he's averaging just five points and 5.5 rebounds per game
in 19.2 minutes, while shooting 37.1 percent from the field.

McDyess said what's even more surprising is that he is getting more open shots
this season.

Part of the problem has been that McDyess is struggling to find his niche
in the offensive system implemented by new Pistons coach Flip Saunders.

McDyess is accustomed to getting the ball in the post early,
and as a game progresses, he branches outside to shoot baseline mid-range
jump shots

he gets a chance to establish himself in the post.

in the lane early against the Denver Nuggets last Wednesday.
He responded with a season-high 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting from
the field to aid Detroit's win. McDyess also had season-highs in blocked shots
(2), steals (2) and assists (2).

Probably more than any Piston, Tayshaun Prince enjoyed having Sunday off.
He played a total of 94 minutes in the 120-114 double overtime loss to Washington
on Friday, and the 85-76 win at Milwaukee on Saturday night.

"That's what happens when you sign those big contracts,"
said Pistons coach Flip Saunders, referring to
the five-year extension Prince signed last month that's worth
more than $47 million. "You have to get your money's worth."

Actually, Saunders told reporters Saturday that Prince's defense
on Bobby Simmons was the reason he played so much.

was held to six points while missing eight of 11 shots from the field.
