Pistons complete second-best November in team history

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Championships aren't won in November,
but a team can lay the foundation for a successful playoff run during
the first month of the season.

你不能在十一月就贏得總冠軍,但是你可以在球季的第一個月就奠定季後賽贏球的基礎

The Detroit Pistons hope that is the case after capping off one of
the most successful Novembers in franchise history with a 93-83 win
against New Jersey Wednesday night.

Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace said the fast start is in response to
the team's early struggles a year ago.

we were a little tired, a little lackadaisical," Wallace said.
"But this year, we came out with that fire."

Only the 1990-1991 Pistons, who had a 13-2 record in November,
had a more successful first month of the season.

The quick start has been a surprise to many who expected the Pistons
to go through a more difficult transition period
under new head coach Flip Saunders.

開季這麼好的戰績嚇到了一些人,

"The bottom line for them (his players), they look at situations
and they want to do whatever it takes to win," Saunders said.

Despite the fast start, Saunders believes the Pistons can get better.

不管開季亮眼的戰績,老桑還是相信活塞可以更好

"I still think our room for improvement is great," Saunders said.
"There's a lot of things we're still going to do yet.
It is surprising that they have been able to pick the things up (new system),
and still find ways to win games."

Saunders will get plenty of credit, just as his predecessors,
Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle, received praise for their work with the team.

But don't discount that the players have made
the necessary adjustments needed to win, regardless of who was coaching.

"That message gets lost all too often," said Joe Dumars,
Detroit's president of basketball operations.
"These guys deserve credit for their basketball IQs,
to be able to pick up on different systems,
to make the transition from Rick Carlisle, now from Larry, and now to Flip.

The Pistons bench had a poor showing in the second quarter Wednesday.

"We didn't come out with the energy that the first unit had," Saunders said.
"When you build up a 12-point lead as we did (in the first quarter),
the thing is to keep that. You can't lose it that quick.
But when you have young guys, sometimes those are things that happen."

The Nets outscored the Pistons, 24-12, in the second quarter
to take a 45-40 halftime lead.

After the game, Ben Wallace was soaking his sore left foot
in a bucket of cold water. When asked about the injury, Wallace said,
"That's a small thing to a giant." . . .
Point guard Chauncey Billups is receiving a lot of attention from
the national media. A recent article on ESPN.com listed Billups
among a handful of darkhorse candidates
to win the league's MVP award this season. Also,
a Sports Illustrated ranking of the top 10 active point guards
in the NBA lists Billups No. 6.
