OAKLAND, Calif. -- When you see the Detroit Pistons playing so well, it's hard
to imagine that five years ago they were one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Developing a culture of winning was not easy, even for a franchise such as
Detroit, which had won NBA titles in 1989 and '90 before winning a third in
2004.

Just imagine the challenge for perennially bad teams like Golden State, which
played Detroit on Friday, and the Los Angeles Clippers, who will host the
Pistons on Sunday.

They have been two of the worst franchises for years, yet both are among the

Pistons coach Flip Saunders, who took over the head coaching duties for a bad
Minnesota team in 1995, knows how difficult developing an expectation of
success can be with a team that usually struggles.

and later, good ones. Next, they must win road games against bad teams. The
final step of their improved play comes when they consistently win, on the road
, against the better teams in the NBA.

Golden State coach Mike Montgomery understands there's a strong perception that
the Warriors are a franchise that can't win consistently.

"In this area, there's a lot of people not willing to accept the fact that we're
making progress and we might be good at some point," Montgomery said. "We gotta
start somewhere. It starts with us. We gotta believe it."

One of the challenges for up-and-coming teams is to develop a core of players

The Pistons have had the same starting five since the middle of the 2003-2004

Current and former Pistons believe that has been instrumental to Detroit being

said former Piston Corliss Williamson, who won the league's Sixth Man of the

Pairing up against top-notch backcourts has been a common theme for Billups and
Richard Hamilton this season. On Friday, they were to battle Golden State's
Baron Davis and former Michigan State star Jason Richardson. On Sunday, they
will face the Los Angeles Clipper's backcourt duo of Sam Cassell and Cuttino
Mobley.

Billups keeps tabs on a lot of players in the NBA. He has a special interest in
Golden State rookie Monta Ellis, who entered last June's NBA draft after
playing four years of high school basketball for Billups' uncle.

"He's talented," Billups said of Ellis. "He can shoot it, he's athletic, he 's
