It's the biggest nonstory this side of the quest for 72 victories in the
regular season.

It would be one thing if the Pistons were losing games and it was because they
were routinely getting outscored, outrebounded and outplayed by other teams'
benches. It's just not the case.

Worse is that some ill-informed people really expect the reserves to be as

It's just not fair to compare the starters and the reserves. The starting five
has been together for three seasons.

"A lot of the guys coming off the bench, it's like their first year playing
together," guard Rip Hamilton said.

Here's the other thing that's missed: The Pistons are not dependent on their
bench. The starters are still young and, for the most part, still in the prime
of their careers. They expect to play a lot of minutes because they can. It was
the case the last two seasons, and both times the Pistons ended up in the NBA
Finals. Fatigue wasn't a factor.

New faces

It's a process. There are a few new parts. Maurice Evans and Dale Davis weren't
here last season. And Carlos Arroyo, Carlos Delfino and Darko Milicic didn't
get a lot of playing time. Hence, they are just starting to jell with Antonio
McDyess, the sixth man.

minutes to a few. It was significant enough for him to complain. Last season,
reserve Ronald Dupree got a run during the regular season and saw almost no
time in the playoffs.
