AUBURN HILLS -- Games like the Pistons' overtime loss to the Jazz on Saturday
show the futility of trying to project or prorate victory totals over an
82-game schedule.

Statements like, The Pistons are on pace to win 70 games, don't account for
heavy legs, low energy, individual performance lulls or an energy burst from
an opponent. But all those things are facts of life in the NBA, and they were
all on display Saturday.

Actually, the Pistons are fighting through one of those stretches. Since losing
at Cleveland on New Year's Eve, Detroit hasn't exactly been firing on all
cylinders.

It took a 37-point outburst by Chauncey Billups to beat Orlando and a
21-rebound (22 second-chance points) effort by Wallace to escape Seattle. No
hero emerged Saturday, and the Pistons had to deal with the ignobility of
getting beat in overtime at the hands of Greg Ostertag and Milt Palacio.

To get moving forward again, the Pistons are hoping to rejuvenate Rasheed
Wallace. He has been unproductive the last three games, averaging 9.0 points
and 6.0 rebounds, and shooting 11 for 30 (3 for 14 on three-pointers).

getting 21 rebounds in 39 minutes the previous night.

Ostertag beat both Wallaces to an offensive rebound that led to a basket by
Palacio. Then, with the Pistons down by two and needing a stop, Palacio was
able to drive all the way to the basket without much resistance for the
clinching layup.

we did tonight."

patch. You know his legs are heavy when he, a 90-percent free-throw shooter,
