OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sometimes a person will look back on his life, at a certain
choice he made, and wonder how things might have turned out differently had he
gone in another direction.

Pistons coach Flip Saunders was experiencing a little bit of that here before
the game.

Thing is, Saunders knows he made the right call back in 1991, when he walked
away from the chance to be the head coach of the CBA franchise in Oklahoma City
. It seems like a no-brainer now, as Saunders, in his 11th NBA season, is
coaching the NBA's best team.

But at the time, Saunders was just making his mark as a head coach. His
LaCrosse (Wis.) team had won the CBA championship in 1990, followed by a
relatively disappointing season in 1991 (32-24). Oklahoma City was a rising
franchise and owner Chip Land recruited Saunders hard. He courted him for two
full days.

According to Land, Saunders had given him a handshake assurance that he would
take the job.

said. "When I left, I was probably going to take the job. They wanted to wait
48 hours before they really put the heavy pressure on. By the time I got back (
to Wisconsin), though, I felt like I had too many other things in the fire."

One was the hope that his old college teammate Kevin McHale, an executive with
the expansion Minnesota Timberwolves, might call him. Saunders would stay four
more years in the CBA (three at LaCrosse, one at Sioux Falls) before that call
came.

In 1995, Land tried to get Saunders again. Saunders said no, again, and took
the job at Sioux Falls.

"Chip Land really had things going on here," Saunders said. "This is a very
good basketball market. It will be interesting to see what happens, whether the

Count Saunders among those in favor of the Hornets staying in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, they are all big. Women's basketball is big here,"
Saunders said. "It's a good market for the NBA here."

There are two Pistons' names that come up most frequently in Internet trade
rumors -- Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo . The Pistons have gotten calls on
the former, none on the latter, and plan on moving neither.

"We're getting calls, but not on any particular player," said John Hammond ,
Pistons vice president of basketball. "The player we get the most calls on is
Darko. But we are in a position where, I wouldn't say we were hesitant to make
any deals, but we have a pretty good thing going on. To pull the trigger on a
trade right now would be tough to do."

Especially since, Hammond said, the Pistons have made it clear they weren't
moving any of their core players.

Arroyo, for his part, isn't overly thrilled with his role, but doesn't want to
be traded, either.

Saunders indicated before the game that he may be altering Arroyo's role,
bringing him in earlier in the game to play alongside starters Richard Hamilton

"I know I am better and I know I can do a lot more," Arroyo said. "But I am
