Boos? He doesn't expect boos. Not after 10 years of hard work and solid
community relationships.

Emotion? Surely there will be some of that. Like when he gets some rare time
with his still Minnesota-based wife and kids. Or when he sees Kevin Garnett,
who is almost like a son to him.

Other than that, Pistons coach Flip Saunders isn't fretting about what might
overcome him as he steps into the Target Center tonight for a game against his
former team, the Timberwolves.

"I think it would be emotional if it wasn't for how we're playing," he said. "
Being 33-5, I think there's more emotion in what we're doing than what's

But come tonight, that might change. Saunders hasn't stood inside the arena,
which he called home for 10 seasons, since Feb. 2, 2005, the day his former
good friend, Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale,
fired him, citing the team's 25-26 start.

wondered what he could have done better, and he came to a strong conclusion:

"Sometimes, I think, when you're fired, you have a tendency to maybe question
things that you do," Saunders said. "For me, the firing almost entrenched me

was the right way of going about doing it."

The Pistons have been the beneficiaries of that confidence. After hiring
Saunders in July, Detroit now buzzes alone atop the NBA standings with a new
high-efficiency offense that is directly tied to Saunders' presence. The
playbook nearly mirrors the Timberwolves' old book.

guidance last season, the Wolves missed the playoffs, and under new coach
Dwayne Casey, they're toiling around .500 without the signs of spark that
suggest an oncoming turnaround. That's part of the reason Saunders isn't
getting overloaded with emotion as he heads back to the state he called home
for 24 years as a player or coach.

"There's never been a time," he said, "when I've thought, 'Gee, I wish I was
back in Minnesota.' "

Eastern Conference player of the week. He shot 63.5% and averaged 22.3 points
in three games.
