AUBURN HILLS -- You don't want to be arrogant or smug, but just three months
ago, most national pundits were picking the Pistons to finish second in their
division and fourth in the conference.

best 41-game starts in NBA history. Only three teams have earned better

The hallmark of the Pistons' success has been efficiency. They have the second
most assists and fewest turnovers in the league. Their field-goal percentage (
.464) is fifth best. Four of the five starters average in double figures.

Chauncey Billups (19.5 points, 8.6 assists): His play has been worthy of not
only his first All-Star spot, but of most valuable player consideration. The
Pistons have fed off his poise, confidence, efficiency and leadership. His feel
for the game, for when to shoot and when to pass, for creating and exploiting
mismatches, has been off the charts. He and the Suns' Steve Nash are redefining
the point-guard role, proving you can simultaneously run an offense efficiently
, get everybody else involved and score.

Richard Hamilton (21.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists): Because he has been
so consistently productive, upgrades in his game sometimes go unnoticed. But
make no mistake; he has improved his all-around game significantly. He's a
legitimate three-point threat now (league-best 52 percent), and he's added a
post-up game to his repertoire. His turnovers are down and his assists have
increased. But the biggest upgrade has been his defense. He can, and does,
defend either guard position. He has shut down some of the league's top scorers
(he shut out Ricky Davis and Michael Finley already this season). Hamilton will
get consideration for all-defensive team honors.

versatility was showcased earlier this season, when he made an emergency
fill-in at the point-guard position and handled it with poise.

shape and hungry and, as much as any other player, set the tone for this fast
start. Saunders and several coaches around the league have said that Wallace
has been the best power forward in the league thus far. No argument here. He
has stretched defenses with the long ball, and, when the Pistons have needed it
down the stretch, he has provided consistent production in the paint.
Defensively, he's been brilliant. The most recent example was Friday night,
when he single-handedly shut down Pau Gasol in the fourth quarter.

leadership continues to be key. When it looked like the Pistons might be
slipping a bit earlier this season, even though the victories were still coming
, he spoke up immediately and helped right the ship.

minutes at a reasonable level.

NBDL to play some games for Fayetteville. That might happen once Hunter returns
.
