AUBURN HILLS -- The play of reserve Antonio McDyess has been a major factor in
the Detroit Pistons' spectacular start this season.
奧本山訊 -- 替補球員袋鼠的表現已經成為本季底特律活塞擁有驚人開季成績的主要

The Pistons have won 37 of 42 games, and appear poised to return to the NBA
Finals for the third consecutive season.

While his statistics aren't nearly as gaudy as some of the NBA's other top
reserves, McDyess certainly warrants consideration for the league's Sixth Man
of the Year award.

Teammate Tayshaun Prince believes McDyess' biggest hurdle for that award will
be a shortage of playing time.

"A lot of those guys (top players off the bench) play close to 30 minutes a
night," Prince said. "One night, he (McDyess) might get 12 minutes, another
night he might get 18. So his (playing time) varies, but at the same time he

McDyess doesn't believe he has much of a shot at the award.

"I pretty much start off slow every year," said McDyess, who is averaging 6.7
points and five rebounds per game in just 20 minutes per game. "At the end,
it's always about how you finish."

And it is last season's disappointing ending in Game 7 of the NBA Finals at
San Antonio that still bothers McDyess.

McDyess remembers picking up his fourth foul late in the game, and then being
benched by ex-Pistons head coach Larry Brown, who used the 6-foot-9, 215-pound
Prince instead of the 6-9, 245-pound McDyess to guard 7-foot Tim Duncan.

"I think about it (Game 7) every day," said McDyess, who had 10 points, seven

foul out. I ain't playing that many minutes already. That's been kind of hard
to think about when I look back on it."

However, the best start in Pistons history has made the pain of last season
easier for McDyess to cope with now.

"It's kind of easy to swallow now because you feel like we're gonna get back to
where we were, and hopefully, we do, and win." McDyess said.

A Detroit victory tonight against the New Jersey Nets should secure a third
consecutive coach of the month award for Flip Saunders, which would make him
the first coach in NBA history to receive the award three months in a row. The
Pistons have a 13-1 record in January. . . . Expect 3-point shooting to be a
factor in tonight's game. When Detroit defeated New Jersey, 93-83, on Nov. 30,
the Pistons made 10 of 20 3-pointers, while the Nets missed all seven of their
attempts. . . . Detroit's Darko Milicic and New Jersey's Nenad Krstic were
teammates on the top Yugoslavian club team in 2001-2002. . . . The Pistons are
out to win both games at New Jersey for the first time since the 2001-2002
season.
