Do you remember what happened with the Pistons on April 27, 1984?

You might not. But Eddie Rivero does.
你可能不記得了，但E.Rivero肯定記得。
Rivero is a former Pistons locker-room attendant with mild cerebral palsy whose
extraordinary ability to remember obscure sports facts and dates could make
even a Bad Boy's jaw drop.

Today, instead of cleaning up after the players and preparing their lockers
with a fresh set of towels and uniforms, Rivero provides the Pistons coaches
with statistics about opposing players' tendencies.

Doug Collins was the first Pistons coach to request statistical assistance from
Rivero, during the 1996-97 season. Since Collins' tenure, Rivero has provided
information for every subsequent coaching staff.

"Eddie has such a brilliant memory, so I asked him if he would chart different

lives and dies with the Pistons every night and he's just a special guy. It's
people like Eddie who are never seen and yet they make organizations great."

In 2002, Rivero had stopped working as a locker-room attendant, exhausted after
being diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an inflammation that produces tiny lumps of
cells in various organs in the body.

John Hammond, Pistons vice president of basketball operations, wanted to help
Rivero, and decided to employ the Pontiac native's unique abilities in the
newly created position of "basketball information specialist."

"Physically it had become pretty hard for Eddie to do that kind of work" as a

As it has turned out, it's been a very positive experience for Eddie, the
coaches, and the team. ...

Rivero spends 40 hours a week reviewing game tape at his cubicle at the Palace.

"When I first started watching the game videos I could only track one player at
a time but now I can do five," said Rivero, 46, who creates individual reports
on each opposing player. He also keeps track of the plus and minus statistics
for each Pistons player and the different units after substitutions. During
home games Rivero usually sits mid-court at press row or occasionally with his
wife, Joyce, in the stands.

for the Detroit Shock.

Rivero's mutual love affair with the Pistons began in 1980, when he was hired
as a custodian at the Silverdome. Four years later he became a locker-room
attendant and a fixture with Pistons players, who would often joke with him and
test him on his basketball facts.

"I would see Eddie in the morning while I worked out and he would come up with

"He has this special gift and despite a few challenges in his life, he is the
nicest and most loyal guy you could ever have. You love being around him."

"Our championship teams used to have these great conversations with Eddie. The
information he was coming up with was right and helpful," said Thomas, now the

him to keep track of players' tendencies. But the first thing everybody
respects about Eddie is that he is such a good person."

During games at the Silverdome, Rivero also began feeding information to
Pistons broadcaster George Blaha's statistician, Joe Abramson. He would keep
track of things such as a team's runs or how much the Pistons scored after a
certain substitution.

"Eddie gave us some stuff that nobody even thought of," Abramson said. "A lot
of people are using plus and minus stats, but Eddie was doing it before anybody
else years and years ago."

Blaha also recognized Rivero's abilities early on.

tell what was going on in a game," said Blaha, who still sometimes turns to
Rivero during games for information.
