Heat Offense: Shaquille O'Neal started Game 1 in attack mode. He caught the
ball and overpowered Ben Wallace early in the game. However, after the first
quarter he tired and got into foul trouble again. He had no explosion and
lift during the second half and missed point-blank shots. The Heat are going
to need Shaq to play at a higher level as this series progresses. He and
Dwyane Wade had five turnovers each, and that gets you beat in the playoffs.

The Heat did a very good job in the fourth quarter of getting the ball to
Wade at the top of the key for isolations. In the top isos, the Heat spaced
the other four players allowing, Wade room to drive or pull up for his
jumper. It is the hardest spot on the floor to double because of the
offensive players' locations. It is a lot easier to make the correct play
when Detroit sags or doubles.

this game. They were physical, tougher, and took away Detroit's first and
second options. The Heat disrupted the Pistons offensively, especially in the
second half, and did not allow them to get into their sets. They took away
the Pistons' ability to penetrate and made them settle for midrange jumpers.

they get a day of rest, regroup and look at the things they could have done
better, they will be ready for Game 2.

The Pistons need to attack Miami with a high dose of pick-and-rolls with
Billups and Rasheed Wallace or Ben Wallace. In the Rasheed pick-and-rolls,
the Heat are so worried about Rasheed's 3-point shot that they are in a touch
and go pick-and-roll scheme. Udonis Haslem continually gives a little help on
the dribbler, but is so worried about 'Sheed that he does not stop Billups'
penetration, and Chauncey could really turn the corner and get to the paint.
In the pick-and-rolls with Ben Wallace, the Pistons are able to get Shaq away
from the basket, and he does a poor job defending pick-and-rolls away from
the hoop. Billups can get open shots almost anytime he wants.

In addition, they should abuse the Jason Williams matchup. The Pistons should

dribble. Also, they should run a lot more back-down post-ups for Billups
because it will force the Heat to come and double with Shaq. This creates
open shots for the Pistons on the kick outs and opens lanes for Ben Wallace
to rebound.

Pistons Defense: Ben Wallace is the best frontcourt defender in the NBA and
his one-on-one defense on Shaq is another illustration of why he may be the
toughest player in the NBA. He gave up his body, playing Shaq one-on-one in
the low post. He got beat up, bruised and bloodied for the sake of his team.
He takes playing Shaq one-on-one as a personal challenge and he knows if he
can limit Shaq's effectiveness throughout the series the end result will be a
Pistons victory. Although it did not make the difference on Tuesday, it may
in Game 2.

The Pistons' pick-and-roll defense was poor in Game 1. Their bigs gave very
little help with hard hedges or stunts and their rotations with the guys in
the back line of their defense was nonexistent. Sharpness in pick-and-roll
defense is essential in the playoffs, and the Pistons' lack of energy in this
phase of defense was another sign of their fatigue from the Cleveland series.

The Pistons have several additional problems they must address. They have no
one who wants to guard Wade. Hamilton cannot guard him, and it looked like
Billups had no interest or energy to guard him. Their best defender is
Prince, but Wade's explosiveness, and quick, hard-driving moves may be too
much for him also. The other problem is that the Pistons' ability to give
help from their back line is compromised. Ben Wallace, who may be the best
help defender in the league, must be cautious about rotating off Shaq to
help. The Heat know that if Ben rotates, they can lob it to Shaq for an easy
score, or Shaq will get a high volume of offensive rebounds.
