Saunders scrambles to recover team's mojo, avoid elimination

The crowds will come to the Palace once more tonight, for Game 5 of the Eastern
Conference finals. They will inch along Lapeer Road, park in the vast lot, hand
over a pricey ticket and yell for three hours. Flip Saunders, the first-year
Pistons coach, expects them to be "boisterous."

Yet, by night's end, they might see an abrupt end to a season that, weeks ago,
seemed destined for June glory.

The Pistons, who had the best regular-season record in franchise history, are
one loss from an untimely demise, down 3-1 against the carefree Miami Heat. In
order to win, they must make measurable improvements from their play in Miami,
where they lost one game by 15 points and another by 11.

formal practice. Saunders, however, said videotapes were being prepared for
possible viewing Tuesday night. Saunders joked he might rent "Space Jam" -- the
Bugs Bunny/Michael Jordan flick -- as a way to help his team regain the lost "
mojo."

Dwyane Wade is shooting almost 70% in the series. The Pistons slowed him with a

best I've seen him in two or three years."

Saunders was asked on Tuesday if Wallace needs greater offensive involvement --

"Everyone's talked a lot about that," Saunders said. "Ben's had opportunities.
And he passed up opportunities. You can't just look at field-goal attempts. If

Wallace was among the Pistons who criticized Saunders over the weekend. He said
there has been a "night and day" difference between the team's defensive
approach in practice last year and offensive emphasis now. Saunders publicly
disagreed with that statement before Monday's game.

After the criticisms, Saunders said Tuesday that some of his players -- he
would not name them -- approached him to say that what others had done was not

"Deep down, the players know, just like the coaches," Saunders said. "Everyone
knows what's going on.

And now, Detroit must do something that would be nearly unprecedented, for
Saunders and for the franchise. As an NBA coach, Saunders has won only one of
the nine series in which he has trailed, 0-1, as he did to start this series.
The Pistons, meantime, have won only once when trailing 3-1, against the
Orlando Magic in 2003.

-- Riley will ensure the Pistons do not make a third consecutive appearance
there.
