One more time: Brown returns to where he once coached

DETROIT (AP) — Larry Brown has a lot of experience with this:
returning to an NBA city where he used to coach.

The Hall of Fame coach will be doing it for seventh time Friday night
when he leads the New York Knicks at Detroit. This time, however,
won't be like the rest.

"I was fired, so it's a little different," Brown said Thursday
during a conference call.

The Pistons also were the first team Brown led to an NBA championship,
and Detroit fell just short of repeating last June. After weeks of negotiations,
the Pistons and Brown agreed on a $7 million severance package
with three years and about $18 million left on his contract.

Brown consistently said last season he wanted to coach in Detroit again,
but the team wearied of his apparent interest in the Knicks' coaching job
and a front-office opportunity in Cleveland.

The 65-year-old Brown was unable to assure the Pistons
he would be fit to coach this year. He had hip surgery early last season
and that led to an undisclosed medical problem, which persisted
after a second procedure in the spring and a hospital visit in the summer.

"I think that's what they weren't willing to risk this season,
and I understand that," Brown said.

Brown said his problem is still not resolved.
"I've been in the hospital twice in the last three weeks," he said.
"They feel like I have to wait until after the season
to get some things taken care of. I couldn't do it now
because it would take too long, but I'm OK.

Flip Saunders became Detroit's third coach in four seasons.
He agreed to a four-year contract worth up to $26 million in July,
less than a day after Detroit completed terms of Brown's exit.

Some predicted the Pistons would take a step back without Brown,
but they finished November with the NBA's best record,

Brown has a four-year contract with the Knicks worth a reported $40 million.

and he's sitting on the other side, it's going to be kind of weird,"
Detroit guard Richard Hamilton said.

A mix of cheers and boos is expected when Brown is introduced at The Palace,
where Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders was once jeered
while attending a game after he retired from the Detroit Lions.

"We got a tough crowd," guard Lindsey Hunter said.

Dumars told The Associated Press.
"Larry and our players brought us a world championship,
and that's the ultimate in this business."

Brown insisted he was not thinking about the crowd.

Brown, however,
is still bothered by comments made by Pistons owner Bill Davidson
after his departure.

"It troubles me that he thought I was a bad guy," Brown said.

While he is saddened about the way his two-year stint ended,
it didn't ruin his memories.

"When I walk in The Palace, I'll have a lot of special feelings," Brown said.
"It was two of the greatest years I had," he added.
"I'll always be thankful the opportunity Joe and Mr. D gave me."
