PISTONS CORNER: Poor defense leading to bad offense
【底特律角落報】「不佳的防守是進攻失常的主因」
Earlier this season, the Pistons caught the league's attention for an unusual
reason.

The group known more for its physical defense dominated other teams offensively
, scoring more than 100 points and shooting more than 50% from the floor
regularly.

It was fun to watch, and it was exciting for the players, especially after so
many seasons of that grind-it-out, slow brand of basketball.

But for nearly two months, that high-scoring, efficient offense has been MIA.
The Pistons haven't shot more than 50% from the field since Jan. 19. And after
scoring at least 100 points 23 times through January, the Pistons have topped
the century mark only once since, in last week's win over Chicago.

So where did that offense go? You'll have to look to the other end of the

"When you have to take the ball out, you can't run," point guard Chauncey
Billups said. "This last couple of weeks our defense hasn't been the same. When
you have to take that ball out, you can't get transition baskets."

It's one of coach Flip Saunders' favorite sayings: Good defense breeds good
offense. If the Pistons stop teams on the defensive end, they can push the ball
up the court and try to get fast baskets. If other teams score at will, they
lose that edge.

"Our defense got lost in the shuffle," center Ben Wallace said. "When that
happens, that's when we get away from playing the way we're capable of playing.
We have to be more aggressive on the defensive end."

Other factors play minor roles. The rotation has been in flux with the addition
of Tony Delk. Antonio McDyess hasn't played at the same level since he suffered
a broken nose in January. And midseason fatigue has set in.

But Saunders' plan to turn the offense back on is simple: Start working on

Rasheed Wallace isn't concerned.

"I guess we cooled off a little bit around January and the All-Star break. You
know, it's all part of it. I'd rather cool off then, than cool off now and roll
into the playoffs. But we're going to be all right."

The Pistons aren't going to bring free agent guard Fred Hoiberg into their fold
, at least not this season.

Team president Joe Dumars, who had been talking with the veteran shooter since
the middle of last week, gave Hoiberg the news Sunday night.
在經過幾天的會談之後，杜老爺在禮拜一正式對外發布了這項消息。
Hoiberg played for Saunders for two seasons in Minnesota. He hasn't returned to
the NBA since undergoing two heart surgeries last summer.
