If Chauncey Billups had his way, he would only get recognition for his work on
the basketball court. The countless hours he gives to charitable and community
service causes, well, he would rather that stay under the radar.

The Professional Basketball Writers Association have taken note of his
community service and have bestowed on him the oldest sportsmanship and
community service honor, the annual J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award.

"It's a great award," Billups said before Monday's game. "The thing about stuff

Billups maintains an active list of community services projects, primarily for
underprivileged kids, in Detroit, Minneapolis and his hometown of Denver.

In Detroit, he has been involved in the Childrens Center Annual Celebrity Golf
Classic the past three years. He has helped raise more than $100,000. The

Minneapolis area to one Pistons game every year.

Leadership Academy in Denver, an academic camp that readies kids for college.
Billups takes part in a three-week camp each summer with students, promoting
leadership, critical thinking, team work and conflict resolution skills.

Graduates of the program who are accepted to Regis University receive
Porter-Billups Academy scholarships.

In February, Billups brought 10 of the academy's top students to a game in
Detroit and also gave them a tour of the Charles H. Wright African American
Museum and the Motown Museum.

Billups is the fifth Piston to win the award, the first since Joe Dumars in
1994. The other winners were Bob Lanier, Kent Benson and Isiah Thomas.

Billups, in a vote of the 150 members of the Professional Basketball Writers
