FIRE MAN: Passion for basketball endears rookie Afflalo to teammates

PORTLAND, Ore. -- When the Pistons arrive in Los Angeles
on Thursday to prepare for Friday night's game against the
Lakers, it will be a homecoming for Pistons rookie Arron
Afflalo, who grew up in nearby Compton, Calif., and attended UCLA.
當活塞隊星期四到LA準備禮拜五晚上對湖人的比賽，
那對阿福來說是回到老家鄉。他在附近(Compton)長大，大學念UCLA。

But there's nothing "California dreamin' " about Afflalo.
但是對於阿福來說並沒有什麼加州夢。

Plenty of rookies work hard. It goes with the territory.
But Afflalo stands out in pure intensity.
很多菜鳥都很努力，跟被劃界線很有關係。
但是阿福卻特別顯眼，尤其是他的積極程度。

"It's a bunch of things," he said. "Love, pride -- I don't know.
I really don't know. Whenever I put my heart into something,
I just want to be the best at it all the time.
Being the best -- or one of the best -- in this league is not easy.
It's not easy."
"這包含了很多東西，愛、榮耀...我不知道耶，真的不知道
 當我把心思放在個東西上，我就想要成為第一。
 當最厲害的－或是最厲害的其中之一－在這個聯盟裡不簡單。

"I don't think (the work ethic) has so much to do with
basketball. It's just me."

Afflalo, 22, said he craves being on the court and improving
his skills. So much so that Rasheed Wallace -- prone to calling
everyone by a nickname -- has dubbed Afflalo "Show-be." (Rhymes with Kobe.)
阿福(22)說他熱衷於在場上跟增進他的球技。
熱衷到sheed－大家都知道他愛取名字
封給阿福新的綽號－Show-be (跟kobe押韻)


"He's real intense, and that's what I like. That fits perfect
on this team," Wallace said. "He's like Kobe (Bryant) in some
of the things he does."
"他很積極，我很喜歡他這一點。這樣能夠跟隊上融合的相當完美。
 他作的某些事情跟kobe倒是挺像的。"


Afflalo seemed embarrassed about the nickname, but assistant
coach Michael Curry said, "Well, if there's someone you're
going to pattern yourself after, it might as well be Kobe Bryant."
阿福對於這封號感到有點害羞，但是助理教練咖哩說
"如果說要把自己類比於某個人，kobe倒是不錯的選擇。"


The nickname fits not because Afflalo has Bryant's all-world
skills, but because he has all-world drive.
這個綽號不只是指kobe的全世界性的技能，還包含了他的全世界性的動力。

"He works hard, even for a rookie," point guard Chauncey
Billups said. "I told him, if he keeps that up, if he works
hard all his career ... shoot. He works harder than most guys I know."
槍西說
"他很努力，不只是菜鳥程度來說。
 我跟他說如果他能這樣持續下去 如果他整個生涯都這麼拼命...
 靠 他比我認識大多數人都還拼。"


The Pistons didn't bring in the 6-foot-5 guard for a workout
before drafting him No. 27 overall in June. President Joe
Dumars knew everything he needed to know without that formality.
活塞在六月用第27選秀權選他之前並沒有把這六呎五吋的後衛
叫來家裡泡泡茶觀賞看看。JD說不用這些儀式性的程序老喬都已經知道他該知道的。

"I loved the fact he could defend as well or better than
anybody in the draft," Dumars said. "But the thing that
put him over the top was character. If you're picking
someone late in the first round, it's not because he's
the most high-flying, fastest-running, freakish-athletic guy."
"我超欣賞他有好的防守，好到甚至比整梯選秀的防守都好，我超愛~~
 但是選他的原因是他的人格個性。當你在選秀後半選人的時候
 你不會是選剩菜裡面跑的最快,跳的最高,具有驚人運動細胞的人。"

Upon arriving in Michigan, Afflalo lived up to his
reputation, making it to the practice facility by 7 a.m.
every day from August through training camp.
一到密西根，阿福就開始建立他的聲望
從八月到練習營每天早上七點就到練習球場。

"He'd get an hour of shooting in," said Curry, who monitored
those early sessions. "Then he'd get an hour of weightlifting
and flexibility work. Then he'd go eat breakfast.
 ... He was that way the whole summer."
咖哩(負責早上的菜...ㄟ...監督那些早上練習的)說
"他會先投一個小時的球，然後再一個小時的重訓跟柔軟訓練。
 然後他就去吃早餐。
 整個暑假都是降..."

Before regular-season games, Afflalo has been known to
arrive at the Palace as early as 3 p.m. to get in extra
shots. He shrugs off any notion that it's noteworthy.
在例行賽賽前，大家都知道阿福早在下午三點就會抵達宮殿
他倒是覺得這些根本沒什麼好提的。

"Basketball's fun to me," Afflalo said. "It's not a job.
It's not work. I don't feel like, man, I gotta get up and
go to practice. I love basketball. I would do it all day, and I do."
"籃球對我來說很好玩，他不是工作。我不會覺得，唉，我又要起床去練球。
 我愛籃球，我會整天都打球，然後我是..哈哈 "

Because Afflalo works so hard, coach Flip Saunders had no
qualms about throwing him into the starting lineup for the
first two games of the season, while Richard Hamilton was
away for the birth of his son.
因為阿福的努力，在賽季前兩場球Rip跑去生兒子
老桑對於把他丟進先發沒有絲毫的猶豫。

But for that same reason, Saunders was troubled about
sitting Afflalo the entire game in Seattle on Sunday.
但是基於同一個原因，老桑對於禮拜天在西雅圖感到相當困惑
小福整場球賽沒上場過。

"You feel bad because he's a guy who's busting his tail," Saunders said.
"當一個人如此的努力賣命而不能讓他上場會感到有點難過"

If anything, the DNP further fueled Afflalo's drive.
但是DNP卻是替阿福增加更多的動力。

"To start the season how I did," Afflalo said, "starting
for Rip to not playing in a game, it's such drastic changes
that you really appreciate just being in this league and
what you've been blessed with, which makes you want to
work even harder to get back to that point in a more stable situation."

"開季先發到不能上場比賽這種高反差的改變
 其實會讓人去想能夠在這個聯盟裡打球是一種福氣
 以生具有的天賦也是
 這會讓你更想努力到達一個一定的程度，能夠比較穩定的狀態。"
