INDIANAPOLIS -- Once a year Joe Dumars sat in the Pistons' dressing room with a
towel draped over his head, his eyes closed and swollen. He often stooped over
a tub of hot water with vapors opening his nostril passages.

attention to detail might be the top reasons along with his stingy defense.

inducted in ceremonies Sept. 9 in Springfield, Mass.

day (this past Friday) . Last year Dumars got the call at 1:30 p.m. This year
the phone rang before 12:30 p.m.

Dumars never became a high-wire act. He never left fans gasping for air with
spectacular plays. He played low to the ground, bulled his way past guards like
a defensive back breaking up a pass and become one of the best defenders in NBA
history.

Johnson the toughest defenders he ever faced. Barkley and Wilkins said Dumars
was the best all-around player on the Pistons -- even ahead of Isiah Thomas.

Here is the bottom line Dumars respects most. The Pistons are 875-642 (.577)
with Dumars as a player or team president. They've won three NBA titles, played
in five NBA Finals and advanced to eight Eastern Conference finals. On teams
without Dumars, the Pistons are 1,056-1,363 (.436) and own no titles.

Indiana from Bloomington to the Indianapolis Airport.
