The Atlanta Hawks were the only NBA team with two lottery picks last June. With
the Nos. 3 and 11 picks, Atlanta wound up with big man Al Horford and point
guard Acie Law. They add to a collection of other recent Atlanta lottery picks,
including Marvin Williams, Josh Smith and Shelden Williams. If the Hawks got it
right last June, they should be finished with the lottery for a while.
    亞特蘭大老鷹是唯一一支在去年六月選秀會上擁有兩枚樂透選秀權的NBA球隊。亞特蘭

About a month after the draft, I wrote that the Pistons – who didn’t have any
lottery picks – had a young big man and a young point guard they wouldn’t
swap for the two newest Hawks.

After watching the teams play their fourth and final game of the regular season
last night, I’ll stand by that. The Pistons wouldn’t swap Rodney Stuckey and
Amir Johnson for Horford and Law. And I say that after watching Horford keep
the Hawks close by grabbing 16 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.

That extends Horford’s impressive rookie body of work. He’s a lock to make
the All-Rookie team and, if voters are open-minded, has a chance to challenge
Kevin Durant for Rookie of the Year, though Durant’s scoring numbers – on a
team gutted to hasten his development and lacking other legitimate scoring
options – are going to be far gaudier than Horford’s.

Let’s compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges – Horford to Johnson
and Law to Stuckey.

My guess is that most NBA personnel people would agree that Horford is the
safer bet to be a solid pro for the next 12 to 15 years than Johnson, but that
most would further agree that Johnson has a higher ceiling. A lower floor, to
be sure, but a higher ceiling – meaning that Johnson could be anywhere from a
double-double All-Star on the high end to a role player on the low end, while
Horford will be no worse than a solid starter for a contending team and perhaps
much more.

has a chance to be a blue-ribbon thoroughbred.

The Pistons, seeing Johnson’s work ethic and passion for the game, are more
certain than most that he’s going to come closer to the high end of estimates
as to his future. Horford, at 21 a year older than Johnson and already pretty
much grown into this body, is infinitely closer to being a finished product
than Johnson, who right now does more than get by on just raw athleticism and
energy. There is almost no nuance to Johnson’s game now, yet the numbers he
puts up in limited minutes are staggering. Horford’s 16 rebounds came in 36
minutes; Johnson played less than seven minutes and had four rebounds. Horford
scored 12 points in his 36 minutes; Johnson scored six in his seven.

Now, there’s something to be said for being good enough to command 36 minutes
and reasons Johnson was limited to seven. A big one is that Johnson is playing
behind Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Jason Maxiell. Horford, for all his
headiness and fearlessness, would be coming off the bench in Detroit, too.
It’s also very likely that at some point the graph line on an extrapolation of
Johnson’s production in limited minute would turn.

But nobody knows exactly where it would turn. And that’s the point: Horford is
more of a known commodity, but Johnson’s potential is immensely intriguing.

Oranges to oranges is an easier comparison: Stuckey, at 21 a year younger than
Law, looks like a slam dunk over the Atlanta rookie.

Even though the Hawks have a glaring deficiency at point guard, Law hasn’t
been able to muscle aside journeymen Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue. Against
the Pistons, he played seven minutes and his team lost six points to the
Pistons; Law missed both his shots and the Pistons targeted him defensively.

I’ve talked to a few NBA scouts who genuinely like Law. They think he’ll play
in the NBA a long time. He’s as earnest as they come and he did tremendous
things at Texas A&M in four years there, a college version of Chauncey Billups
for the way he embraced pressure-filled moments. But I haven’t talked to
anyone who doesn’t believe Law’s future is fairly limited – he’s not an
explosive enough athlete and, if he doesn’t have any obvious weakness, neither
does he have any overwhelming strength.

of point guards he encounters. Those he doesn’t tower over at 6-foot-5 he
overpowers with unusual upper-body strength. Backup point guards who’ve tried
to guard him in the past few weeks, as he’s begun to find his way, have
bounced off him like pinballs.

There’s also this: As far ahead of Law as Stuckey appears to be now, where
might he be had he had four years of high Division I experience behind him, as
Law does, instead of two years at low-major Eastern Washington? Where might he
be without sitting out almost two months with a broken left hand?

And while Law could only wrest seven minutes away from the likes of Lue and
Johnson last night, Stuckey allowed Billups – three-time All-Star – 19
minutes of rest, or just enough to come back in the final six minutes with guns
loaded, scoring 12 points to lead the Pistons to their ninth straight win.
Watching it, it was hard to resist the notion that had Atlanta used the No. 11
pick on Stuckey instead of Law, it was a game Atlanta wins.
    而昨晚Law只能自Lue和Johnson這樣的球員手上要到7分鐘的時間，但Stuckey卻讓曾三
度入選全明星賽的槍蜥休息19分鐘之久，讓他能在充分休息後於比賽最後6分鐘回到場上，
攻下關鍵12分，帶領活塞拿下連續第9場勝利。看了之後，很難再堅持當初亞特蘭大在選秀
會上第11順位跳過Stuckey而挑選Law是個正確的決定了。

After the win over Charlotte on Sunday night, Jarvis Hayes was talking about
the chemistry Stuckey and Johnson seem to have developed despite playing
together for limited minutes in just the past few weeks, since Johnson gained a
foothold in the rotation.
    在星期天對上夏落特山貓的比賽獲勝後，Jarvis Hayes說到Stuckey和Johnson之間，

→ sssfrost:LAW 因為手傷與其他傷勢也錯過一個月的比賽。而且他的上
→ sssfrost:場時間不穩定，亦來自於球隊的競爭力相對較低，較無餘裕
→ sssfrost:安心讓他比賽。在有限的時間內，LAW 的切傳表現實際上比
→ sssfrost:AJ、LUE 等人都來得好。Woodson 對於控衛的要求也很嚴格
