The defensive strengths of Ben Wallace, Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace are
as well-known around the NBA as Larry Brown's good-bye speech.

Richard Hamilton's defensive skills? Not so much.
那Rip（的防守）呢？Larry（Brown）就沒說什麼了。
Hamilton is known for his shooting, his conditioning, his curls, his touch,
even his mask. Not his shutdown ability.
Rip擅長投籃是大家都知道的，他過人的體能、迂迴跑位，還有投籃時的輕柔手感，甚至連
他臉上戴的面罩也都一樣地廣為人知。但是沒人知道，其實他的防守也挺有一套的。
But Hamilton's main defensive assignment, usual 20-point scorer Ricky Davis,
went scoreless Monday. Hamilton said he tried to deny Davis the ball, and it
worked. The Celtic took just eight shots and was scoreless for what he said was
the first time in his NBA career, according to the Boston Globe.
儘管Rip並不以防守著稱，不過由他負責看管，本季每場可得20分的塞爾提克重砲手Ricky
Davis卻在禮拜一抱蛋而歸。Rip說，他使出了渾身解數，讓Ricky拿不到球，以降低他的威
脅性，這方法確實奏效了。根據波士頓地球報的統計資料，Ricky這場比賽8投全數落空。

It was just one game, keep in mind, but a nice chance to ask a few questions.

Has Hamilton been underrated as a defender?

"We're all underrated as defenders on this team," center Ben Wallace said.

But has Hamilton's D improved considerably in the past few seasons?
但是，Rip的防守是否真的在過去幾季以來大有長進？
Yes, Wallace said. And that's partially because Hamilton came to the Pistons
with a scorer's mentality, and had to adjust to the physical, grind-it-out
atmosphere simply to survive.
「當然有（進步）囉。」班蛙說。這(指Rip在防守上的進步)有一部分必須歸因於Rip調整

"Early in his career, he was never asked to be a defensive player," Wallace
said. "He was always asked to go out there and look to score. Now we ask him to
go out there and do both. ... It's what we demand of everyone who steps out on
that floor."

OK. But how much of his success is the product of a system and a lineup of
defensively savvy teammates?

"You can put a system in place," Wallace said, "but you've got to have guys
willing to go out and work it. Rip did a great job of going out there and
chasing guys off screens, denying guys to get open looks."

Hamilton has a few advantages. Speed is one, obviously. He can stick with
nearly anyone in the league and never falls out of position. He can chase
through screens. And his size is another: At 6-feet-7, he's long for a shooting
guard.

Still, as the team's leading scorer and the beneficiary of a large chunk of the
offensive play calls, some nights Hamilton takes it easy on defense. With so
many smart bigs willing to step out and provide help, Hamilton can afford to do
that.
而且，身為一個球隊的主攻手，在裁判考慮是否要吹犯規時通常會比較有利，這可以在幾
場（必須由Rip防守對方重砲手的）比賽裡減低他在防守時的壓力。加上隊中幾個精於防守

"Sometimes it's natural to take a step back a bit," coach Flip Saunders said."
It just depends on the flow of the game. But the one thing he does -- and a lot
of our other guys do -- when it comes time to clamp down, he has the ability to
do that."

SHAKEN: Another positive sign from last week: Hamilton had one of his best
games against San Antonio's Bruce Bowen. Hamilton had 22 points and shot
10-of-23 from the field Thursday night.
Rip是少數幾個在包溫面前能有優異表現的人之一。他在禮拜四對上馬刺的時候砍進22分
（投23中10）。
In the Finals last season, Bowen limited Hamilton to 16.7 points and 38%
shooting. On Christmas, Hamilton had just 11 points and missed 11 of 15 shots.

聖誕大戰，Rip也只得了11分，而且15投只中4。
Hamilton seemed to shake Bowen, runner-up for defensive player of the year last
season, on curls and runs.

單擋，他可以用他擅長的迂迴跑位躲開包溫的追殺。
"We did a good job setting screens," Saunders said, explaining the improvement.
"We changed it a little bit on some of his runs. He did more change of pace.
He'd change, run, stop, then he took off again. And Chauncey delivered. We set
screens a little bit lower to get Rip a little bit more room coming off those
screens to try and read."
