AUBURN HILLS -- The Pistons' newest dad pulled thick cigars from a black Nike
bag and passed them out to teammates while proudly showing off photos of
4-day-old Richard Clay Hamilton III.
    奧本山訊 -- 活塞陣中才剛升格當老爸的RIP從一個黑色Nike包包中拿出雪茄並遞給隊
友的同時也驕傲地向大家炫耀才剛4天大的RIP三世的照片。

It was Father's Day on Sunday at The Palace and the Pistons' newest player,
Richard "Rip" Hamilton, made his newborn son proud and spread the joy to a
sellout crowd with 21 points, four rebounds and five assists before fouling out
during the Pistons' 92-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. He looked energized,
not like a guy who's struggling to get sleep with his energetic new son waking
up every couple hours begging for food.
    星期天在宮殿球場是父親的節日而這位活塞最新成員，RIP以他的新生兒為榮並將這份
喜悅一併帶給全場爆滿的觀眾，他在犯滿畢業前，於活塞以92比91驚險擊敗亞特蘭大老鷹
的比賽中貢獻了21分、4籃板及5助攻。他看起來精力充沛，一點也不像一個每幾個小時就
必須起床給活力十足且嗷嗷待哺的寶貝兒子餵食的新手老爸。

Rip is the Pistons' newest player because he's not the same guy who woke up
Halloween morning. That Rip Hamilton wasn't as bright as the new Rip.
    RIP是活塞的最新成員因為他和在萬聖節早上起床的那個傢伙已經判若兩人。那個RIP
根本不像這個全新的RIP這麼機靈。

He didn't understand that when a pregnant woman going through labor says call
the doctor, it isn't wise to go to the bathroom and brush your teeth first.
    他不了解當一個懷孕的女人在準備分娩時說趕快請醫師來，你還先到盥洗室刷牙洗臉
、梳妝打扮是不智之舉。

But that's exactly what the old Rip Hamilton did when his girlfriend TJ Lottie
told him she was going into labor. Hamilton wasn't sure if this was the real
thing because he heard women often go through false labors.
    但那確實是過去那個RIP在他女朋友TJ Lottie告訴他她準備要分娩時所做的蠢事。RIP
不確定這次是否是真的，因為他聽過說女人總會誤以為自己快生了。

Besides, the baby wasn't due until today. Hamilton had it all planned. He'd
spend all day Sunday preparing for the birth and then have three days off
before the Pistons played their next game.

的時間準備迎接這個新生命的誕生，之後在活塞進行他們下一場比賽前的這三天向球團請
假在家好好陪伴這對寶貝母子。

"But I guess he wanted to come into the world early," Hamilton said.
    "但我猜他希望能提早幾天來到這個世界報到，"RIP說。

Hamilton understood that when he heard screams from Lottie.
    RIP在聽到Lottie的尖叫時意會到了這件事。

"She was like, 'I know you're not in there brushing your teeth,'?" Hamilton
said with a loud laugh. "That is when I knew she was serious."
    "她就像這樣，'我知道你不會再跑去刷牙了對吧，'？"RIP一面大笑一面說。"那時候
我就知道她這次是認真的了。"

That was 7 in the morning Halloween day. Fourteen hours later, 8-pound, 21-inch
Richard came into the world with his basketball-playing father holding Lottie's
hand and helping her to breathe. It was the most stimulating moment of
Hamilton's life.
    那是萬聖節當天的早上七點。十四小時後，8磅重、21呎長的小RIP在他身為職業籃球
員的老爸握著Lottie並幫助她呼吸的同時來到了這個世上。那是RIP一生中最為振奮的一刻
。

Dread
    恐懼

Hamilton watched births on the Learning Channel and did not think he'd be able
to help out in the delivery room because the old Rip Hamilton was squeamish by
nature.
    RIP曾在學習頻道中觀看生產過程而且不認為他自己能夠在產房中幫助，因為過去那個
RIP天生就容易嘔吐。

"I'm thinking I am not going to be able to get through," Hamilton said. "I am
going to need an oxygen mask. But once it happened it went so quick. I didn't
have time to get nervous. It was amazing. I was a lot stronger than I thought I
was going to be because I had never been in that situation before."
    "我想我應該沒辦法撐完整個過程，"RIP說。"我會需要一個氧氣面罩。但一旦事情發
生而且發生地如此之快。我根本沒有時間緊張。這太神奇了。我遠比我想像的還要勇敢，
因為我從未有過那樣的經歷。"

Hamilton lives in a lavish world. He travels on a private plane, stays in
first-class hotels, lives in a large house and has his own personal chef. It's
a world many can only dream of. But now that world is clashing with his new
world.
    RIP生活在一個奢華世界當中。他旅行時搭的是私人飛機，投宿的是最頂級的旅館，平
時住在一個大房子裡而且還有專屬的個人廚師。這是一個只存在於許多人想像之中的世界
。但現在那個世界和他的新世界產生了抵觸。

He's up late at night, helps with the feedings and admires his son who loves to
stare at his large hands. These moments are precious to Hamilton. He feels like
a new man, and in many ways he is.
    他晚上會熬夜，在幫助餵食的同時順便仔細端詳他喜歡盯著自己大手看的寶貝兒子。
這些時刻對RIP來說是彌足珍貴的。他感覺自己就像一個全新的人，而在許多方面確實如此
。

Gaining understanding
    開始了解

He never understood until recently why his mother, Pamela Long, called him "
baby" even though he was 29. Now he understands. While mom coddled him his
father Richard told Rip about the good and bad of life. He talked to his son
about drugs and crime and wanted him to understand the world he lived in and
the importance of escaping it for a better life. Although Rip's son won't grow
up in poverty he wants his son to understand the total scope of life.
    他從不了解為什麼他的母親Pamela Long一直到他29歲了還是叫他"寶貝"，直到最近他
了解了。當母親寵愛RIP的同時，RIP的老爸也告訴他有關生活的陽光和陰暗面。他告訴他
的兒子關於藥物和犯罪的事並希望他能夠了解他所居住的世界以及逃離它去尋求一個更好
的生活的重要性。儘管RIP的兒子將不會在貧困的生活中長大，但他還是希望兒子能夠了解
生活的全貌。

"My dad was the type of person who told me about everything -- sex, money,
drugs," Hamilton said. "I want him to learn the ropes of life, not just
basketball."
    "我爸是那種會告訴我任何事情的人 --  性愛、金錢、藥物，"RIP說。"我希望他能學
習生活的一切，而不只是籃球。"

Pistons assistant coach Michael Curry likes NBA players to have children
because it usually changes them for the better.
    活塞助理教練Michael Curry喜歡NBA球員能夠擁有自己的孩子，因為那通常能讓他們
變得更好。

"It gives them a different perspective on things," Curry said. "I always
thought it helped a lot of them focus and it helped with preparation. When you
have a child, there are a lot more responsibilities. It takes some preparation
to make sure you can prepare for the games but you got home responsibility, too
."
    "那讓他們在看事情時能有一個不一樣的觀點，"Curry說。"我一直認為能夠幫助他們
更為專注而且它幫助他們做好更充分的準備。當你有一個孩子，你就肩負許許多多的責任
。你會做好萬全準備去迎接比賽，而且你也有了乖乖回家的責任。"

Now, Hamilton wants to be a great dad and player. The tough part is balancing
sleep with basketball because the young Rip isn't sleeping much these days.
    現在，RIP希望能成為一個偉大的老爸兼球員。其中最困難的部份是如何在籃球和睡眠
當中取得平衡，因為接下來這段日子裡面小RIP還是一樣不會一覺到天亮。

"Now you are living for your child," Hamilton said. "It is much different now.
I am playing basketball games. But now no matter what happens on a basketball
floor I have something precious to go home to."
    "現在你是為了你的孩子而活，"RIP說。"那跟過去可是大大不同。我是個職業籃球員
。但現在不管籃球場上發生了什麼事，家裡都有個寶貝在等著我回去。"
