First, you must have a badge to use any HM technique.
You can use:
-FLASH only if you have the BOULDERBADGE
-CUT only if you have the CASCADEBADGE
-FLY only if you have the THUNDERBADGE
-STRENGTH only if you have the RAINBOWBADGE
-SURF only if you have the SOULBADGE
You must also have the proper HM:
-HM01 teaches CUT; get it from the captain of the S.S. Anne
(If you don't get it, you don't go any farther)
-HM02 teaches FLY; get it from the woman in the house next to
Cycling Road (You need CUT to get it)
-HM03 teaches SURF; get it in the Secret House in the Safari Zone
-HM04 teaches STRENGTH; get it from the Safari Zone's warden
(give him the Gold Teeth)
-HM05 teaches FLASH; get it from Prof. Oak's aide on Route 2
Teach the technique to the pokemon you want it taught to (WARNING:
CHOOSE CAREFULLY! HM techniques can never be deleted!).
Use logic:
teach SURF to water pokemon, such as Krabby. (In fact, teach CUT, SURF,
and STRENGTH to Krabby, it can learn all 3) When you need the move,
select the pokemon that knows it.
The moves will appear above the normal options. Use them for:
-CUT is used to cut down bushes, and can be used to cut grass in grassy areas
-FLY is used to fly to any town you've visited
-SURF is used to ferry across water
-STRENGTH is used to move boulders
-FLASH is used to light up Rock Tunnel
These are also used in battle (of course!)
-CUT deals normal damage. It is NORMAL-type.
-FLY causes a pokemon to fly over attacks, then dive-bomb the enemy.
It is FLYING-type.
-SURF causes huge waves of water to attack the enemy. It is WATER-type.
-STRENGTH deals normal damage. It is NORMAL-type.
-FLASH decreases accuracy. It is NORMAL-type.
