[Note] Rays 1B Pena to miss WBC after surgery

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (TICKER)—Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena will
miss the World Baseball Classic after undergoing recent abdominal surgery.

The Rays said Thursday that Pena underwent“minor”surgery in Philadelphia on
January 8 to repair a tear to a lower abdominal muscle.

He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next month, but
will be kept out of the WBC for precautionary reasons.

Last season, Pena, 30, led the American League champion Rays in home runs (31)
and RBI (102) despite missing 20 games with a broken left index finger.

Pena also earned a Gold Glove in 2008 and set a major league single-season
record with nine bases-loaded walks.
