Righty inks one-year deal; reliever invited to Spring Training
ST. PETERSBURG --The Devil Rays signed right-hander Scott Dohmann on Monday and
re-signed right-hander Shinji Mori.
Dohman, 28, was signed to a one-year Major League contract. The Rays released
Mori from the roster then signed him to a Minor League contract with an
invitation to Major League Spring Training in order to make room on the 40-man
roster for Dohmann.
Dohmann split last season between the Rockies and Royals, pitching in a career-
high 48 games, all in relief. He had a combined record of 2-4 with a save and a
7.08 ERA. A sixth-round selection by the Rockies in the 2000 First-Year Player
Draft, he spent his entire professional career with the Colorado organization
before being acquired by the Royals at last season's July 31 trade deadline.
Over the last three seasons, he has appeared in 121 games, all in relief, and
compiled a 4-8 record with one save and a 5.74 ERA. He has averaged more than a
strikeout per inning in his career (128 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings).
Mori, 32, was signed in January 2006 and reported to Spring Training with the
promise of contending for the vacant closer's role. But shoulder problems led
to a slow start and they eventually ended his season when he tore the labrum in
his right shoulder while pitching in a Minor League exhibition game on March
20.
Mori underwent rehabilitation instead of surgery in the hopes that it would
allow him to pitch in 2007. While Mori has been throwing, manager Joe Maddon
said that Mori's velocity had not improved enough to be ready by Spring
Training.
The Seibu Lions received approximately $750,000 from the Rays for the right to
sign Mori. Mori signed a two-year deal with the Rays that guaranteed him $1.2
million. In releasing Mori, the Rays paid a $200,000 buyout rather than
exercising the 2008-09 option for $2 million.
