Scouting Report on Sam Fuld

There is not a player in the Cubs' system that you'll hear me gush over
more than Sam Fuld. In the past six months, his stock has rose to the highest
it’s been, and good thing for Sam as he recently turned 27 years old. Fuld
is not an elite prospect, he’s more closer to a finished prospect, as in
what you see is what you are going to get. Despite Sam’s size, he’s been
long considered a future MLBer since his high school days due to well rounded
fundamental yet hardnosed style of play. He plays the game the way you were
taught as a kid in little league and the way you want your kids to play. For

山佛不是一位頂極新秀 雖然身材優勢不大 但他似乎會是個mlb 球員

From birth, Fuld has faced adversity and responded with guts and
determination. Sam was born with Juvenile Diabetes, a condition that 40 years
ago would/could have been a debilitating condition, just ask Ron Santo. The
condition is life threatening and life altering, there is no escaping it, it’
s always there and it usually cuts a lifespan short 15 years. At an early
age, his parents put Fuld in charge of monitoring his glucose levels and
daily injections of insulin. One could say Sam learned responsibility and how
to take care of his body at an early age and it payed dividends in baseball
and more importantly in life.

During Fuld’s Junior season in High School, he tore his labrum in his
throwing shoulder and needed surgery. Sam didn’t miss any playing time,
rebounding quickly enough to play the regular high school season. In his
Senior year of high school in 2000, Fuld was regarded as the third best
prospect in the Northeast (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont) which doesn’t say
too much due to the area being weak in competition. Still he showcased his
skills in the Area Code Games against the best of the best of High School in
front of a multitude of scouts. Scouts loved his well rounded fundamentals,
his amazing coverage and routes in centerfield, his plate discipline, and his
knowledge of doing what was best for the team. Even with his impressive
showing, Fuld was not likely to be selected early due to a compiling of
factors. Namely his commitment to Standford and with a professor as a father
and a doctor as a mother, every scout knew education was going to be a huge
road block. Also playing a role was his size, Fuld was below the “ideal”
 baseball frame at the time weighing 170lbs with a height of 5′10. If teams
felt they could have drafted Fuld and signed him, he was probably looking at
going somewhere between the second and fourth round of the 2000 draft. No one
even took a flyer on Fuld, so he had an easy choice of going forth to college
and that’s when his star shined.

Sam Fuld is one of those rare college positional players in that he was a
starter from his freshman year till his senior year. From early on, Fuld’s
attributes started to show collegiately, showcasing skills at leading off
(plus contact, plus eye, plus speed), covering massive ground in centerfield,
showing a strong arm, and intelligent in-game mind. After an excellent
freshman season where he earned a second team Freshman All-American honors
and was selected as an allstar in the PAC-10 division, Fuld really got on his
game in 2002.

As a Sophomore, Sam once again showed excellent contact and plate discipline
but he also showed a bat capable of extrabase power posting 20 2B, 4 3B, and
8 HR in 293 AB with a total line of .375/.426/.553/.979. His 110 hits set a
new Stanford record. Fuld went on one incredible run where he had 22 multihit
games in 25 contests. That helped earn him College World Series All
Tournament Team along with first team All-American honors and a PAC-10
AllStar nod. Fuld’s play also earned him a spot on the 2002 Team USA and on
the radar’s of most teams’ heading into the 2003 draft when he would become
available.

His numbers dipped his Junior year, posting 18 2B, 8 3B, 4 HR with a
.321/.399/.480/.879 in 302 at bats. But Fuld did all the little things as
Stanford’s leadoff hitter and the Cubs took a flyer on him late in the 24th
round and watched him during the summer in the Cape Cod League where he
exploded and burned it up. From there it was known the Cubs were not going to
sign him as they weren’t willing to lay the money down. Of course the same
can be said for the fellow 2003 draftee, catcher Landon Powell whom the Cubs
took in the 25th round. Powell spent that summer losing 30 pounds and getting
in shape, it worked as he was the 24th overall pick in 2004 by the Oakland
Athletics.

Entering the 2004 season, Sam was slated as the third best prospect in the
PAC-10, ahead of BoSox SS and 2007 Rookie of the Year Dustin Pedroia.
According to Baseball America’s Preseason Pac10 picks, they named Fuld as
the best defensive outfield along with the best outfield arm. In Sam’s
Senior year, he threw up his worst season of his college career with a line
of .273/.388/.349/.737 including5 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR in 249 at bats. Yet he still
batted leadoff for Stanford and helped them reach their fourth College World
Series tourney in his fourth season. That helped Fuld become the all-time
College World Series hits leader, surpassing former Cub Keith Moreland, for
the record. It was just one of the many records Sam set his senior at Senior
year at Stanford. Towards the end of the season, Fuld broke his right
shoulder and tore his labrum. During that that stint, the Economics major
Fuld worked for STATS Inc. as a statistician and in offseasons is working on
his Masters in Statistics at Stanford. Even with his injury and poor Senior
season, the Cubs’ took intelligent Fuld in the 10th round after they saw a
former preseason first-third rounder fall to them so late.

這次受傷後山佛(主修:經濟) 到STATS公司上班
最後小熊在2004年的第10輪選他

In his first season with the Cubs organization in 2005, he started off at Low
A Peoria where he showed the Cubs exactly what they thought they drafted. A
leadoff hitter who consistently gets on base, has gap power, great
basestealing technique and plays a great centerfield along with a line of
.300/.377/.433/.810 in 443 at bats. He earned Baseball America’s
classification as the Cubs’ Prospect with the best plate discipline, an
honor he’d own for the following two seasons (06 and 07) as well, taking the
title away from the MLB graduated Matt Murton. From there the Cubs put Fuld
on the fast track, in 2006, he started the year off in High A Daytona but
lost quite a few at bats due to a self inflictive injury in the field with a
final line of .299/.378/.421./.799 in 354 at bats. Despite the lost at bats,
the Cubs still promoted Fuld to Tennessee (AA) in 2007 to start the season.
There he kept up his 2006 pace, with a line of .290/.372/.388/.760 in 335 at
bats. He earned a callup to AAA for 14 games before he got a callup. I hate
to admit it but the only reason why Fuld got his late season promotion was
due to Eric Patterson arriving late for a ballgame (he overslept), where Fuld
was brought into the fold as a utility player (defensive/speed reasons).

Sam followed up his small introduction into the MLB with an extremely strong
Arizona Fall League showing. In 107 at bats, Sam had a line of
.402/.492/.626/1.118, he led the league in many categories including hits
(43), doubles (11), on-base percentage (.492), slugging percentage (.626),
OPS (1.118) and extra-base hits (16). Additionally, he finished second in
hitting (.402) and third in runs scored (20). If your not familiar with the
AFL, it’s known as a good testing ground for prospects either as a 25th man
or fighting to prove they have the skills to start. Fuld impressed everybody,
especially his teammates. Here’s what the Brewers top 2007 pick, Matt
LaPorta, had to say about Sam, “The guy’s unbelievable. Just the way he
goes about it everyday I think everyone learns something from his mental
approach. He’s a guy you want on your team.”

Fuld’s endorsements don’t end there as his AFL coach and former Cub Dave
Clark, had this to say, “There’s no doubt about how valuable he is. He can
hit, he can run, he can throw, he can steal a base, he plays great defense. He
’s a leadoff lefthanded hitter. He’s a catalyst. He does so many things
well. Everything I’ve seen is above average and he can help any major league
ballclub right now. And there are a lot of them watching right now.” Fuld
deserved all the praise he was given as he was named the MVP of the league
and awarded the Dernell Stenson Award which goes to the player who best
exemplifies unselfishness, hardwork, and leadership. Fuld is the second Cub
prospect to be awarded with the AFL MVP as former Cub Jason Dubois won it in
2003. Fuld became the first player to win both awards, and the monetary
rewards he earned along with auction material he accummulated from other AFL
prospects and Cubs’ players, he donated towards the research for Juvenile
Diabetes.

Hitting: Fuld sprays the ball all around the field, never getting pull
dependent. Sam takes advantage of his speed by hitting the ball on the ground
and liners. Rarely does Fuld try and put on a power stroke to take the ball
out of the park or pull it, instead he takes what the pitcher gives him and
works with it. Sam has an amazing eye at the plate, not often does he swing
at pitches out of the zone. Fuld also has the uncanny ability to repeatedly
foul off pitches and make pitchers work, when he gets two strikes, he chokes
up and tries plugging the ball, its not regularly that he strikesout. Sam has
all the qualities to be a leadoff hitter in the big leagues.

Power: Fuld’s power is determined mostly from his extrabase potential in it
dependent upon his speed. The results are seen in his double and triple
marks. Sam never tries to take pitchers’ yard or making borderline pitches
homeruns, Fuld knows his role as a tablesetter. Instead of going out and
trying to drive runners in, he’d rather be the runner that needs driven in.
Much of Sam’s hits are either on the ground or liners for basehits or
sacrifices for the runner. With two strikes, Fuld goes old school, choking up
and concentrating on just making contact. Fuld knows his role and never
deviates from it.

Speed: One of Sam’s greatest attributes is his speed down the lines. Not
only does he have a near 70 speed on a 20-80 scale but he is extremely
intelligent on the basepaths. Fuld has an uncanny ability to read pitcher’s
motions even if it’s he’s first time seeing them. When Sam gets he’s read
right he’s usually dead on. With that skill, Sam might see more and more
late inning installments due to his well rounded play.

速度: 如果把速度分為20-80分 山佛速度應該就是70分
      而且山佛在壘間很聰明 就算是山佛第一次遇到的投手
      他也可以抓到投手 然後盜壘
      因此在比賽後段應該會常看到山佛上場代跑

Defense: Fuld’s wheels help him cover all three outfield positions well, his
strength though is at center. There he can showoff his ground coverage along
with a very strong and accurate arm. Sam has shown the skills at all outlets
with running excellent routes and strong outlets. Fuld can play any outfield
position with confidence.

防守: 山佛的守備 可以讓他勝任外野任何位子 (CF他似乎更熟悉 大學都守CF)
      簡而言之 就是他是強肩犯 又快又凖 判斷又好

MLB Comparison: F.P. Santangelo
 Growing up through high school and college, Fuld was often compared to
players of his similar size and position. Being under 5′10 with scrappy
abilities and speed, his number one comparison was Lenny “Nailz” Dykstra.
For a while, Nailz was MLB’s top leadoff hitter, as well as having the skill
to work counts better than anyone else in baseball. Lenny already got a huge
leg up on Fuld as Dykstra was in the MLB as a 22 year old. If Sam and his
family weren’t so hellbent on going to college then it’s quite possible he
would have been a big league fixture by his 22nd birthday. Yet money wasn’t
the most important issue to Fuld and family, education was, as seen by Sam
choosing Stanford over pro ball.

根據身材 球技 類似山佛的球員是Lenny Dykstra
Dykstra是絕佳的第一棒 但他22歲就上MLB

College lessened Sam’s baseball stock but made him a better man and a more
rounded player. It showed that Fuld was nearly a finished player after his
high school days and that alone dropped his status, from a potential leadoff
hitting centerfielder with potential power to a leadoff hitting centerfielder
with very little power. At 27 years old, Sam has been pushed to the
backburner in the Cubs’ starting OF rotation due to committed contracts and
superstar talent much like Santangelo, who with the Expos had Henry Rod,
Rondell White, Vlad, and etc ahead of him. F.P had a very similar size and
plate skills as Sam as well as being surrounded by players with much higher
ceilings than his own. Santangelo capitalized on his opportunities becoming a
very solid 4th OF along with being a plus pinch hitter for good MLB run. With
the Cubs’ situation, it’s a role that Fuld is looking at with this
organization.

高中時間 其實山佛幾乎就算快完成了
而大學棒球路 讓山佛從一位可能有砲瓦的開路CF 變成幾乎沒砲瓦的開路CF
Santangelo體型 球技跟山佛差不多 在博覽會隊 只能當個4號OF(工具人)
山佛目前也是遇到如此的困境 (當4號OF)

Bob’s Take: Despite Sam Fuld winning the MVP and Stenson Award in the AFL,
Baseball America didn’t even rate him among their top 20 prospects in the
Fall League. Sam is a guy you want on your team, you want a team full of
Fulds, players who give it their all day in and day out, show up and work
hard in practice, along with staying late and arriving early everyday. Fuld
can play all three outfield positions in a plus defensive manner while
possessing a plus arm in left and center.

儘管山佛在AFL拿下MVP跟Stenson Award
BA還是沒有把他列在前20大新秀裡

Right now my money is on Fuld to start the season as Pie’s backup in center
while working some extra time spelling for Fukudome/Soriano and getting some
pinch hitting opportunities. Fuld is versatile enough for Lou both
offensively and defensively that he allows for many late game switches.

現在山佛只能當Pie的候補(譯按:Pie現在似乎在金鳥)有時會當 福留跟Soriano的候補
