Devil Rays designated designated hitter Josh Phelps for assignment.
Typical Devil Rays. Phelps, who hit .266/.328/.424, had worked his way back
into the lineup a couple of big series two weeks ago, but after struggling
last week, now it seems he's gone for good. The Rays should have at least
kept him until Rocco Baldelli returns. He'd probably have outhit Damon
Hollins and Alex Sanchez over the rest of the season. The Rays apparently
will play both Hollins and Sanchez regularly once they return home next week.

Reggie Taylor - OF - Devil Rays         


Devil Rays purchased the contract of outfielder Reggie Taylor from Triple-A
Durham.
It seems that either Damon Hollins and Alex Sanchez will be at DH most days,
so the Rays needed another outfielder. Taylor was hitting .284/.360/.448 in
52 games for Durham. He doesn't figure to play much. Hopefully, the Rays
would have recalled Jonny Gomes or Joey Gathright it they wanted someone
they'd use frequently. Jun. 7 - 5:10 pm et
