Cantu: 'I have no business here' Jorge Cantu said his goodbyes before he walked out of the Rays clubhouse for what he believed was the final time. By EDUARDO A. Allen, Jr.] ST. PETERSBURG - Jorge Cantu said his goodbyes, shaking hands and hugging teammates before he walked out of the Rays clubhouse for what he believed was the final time. Cantu left Tropicana Field after Thursday's game with a sour taste in his mouth but a realization that there no longer was a place for him in the organization. The Rays - hoping to bolster their pitching for four games in three days in New York - recalled RHP Jae Kuk Ryu and RHP Scott Dohmann from Triple-A Durham and optioned Cantu to Durham and designated veteran OF Dustan Mohr for assignment. "It's obvious I have no business here, plain and simple," the 25-year-old infielder said. "I think I have at least earned the right to be let go and help somebody else. It's clear enough that I have no business here, so it's time to go. "Obviously the team is going in a different direction and sometimes you don't fit in their plans and that's the way it goes. I'm sure there's somebody out there who will really appreciate what I've done here." Asked if he believed he had played his last game with the Rays, Cantu said, "I think so." His agent, Steve Canter, said Cantu would report to Durham. "Jorge knows how to play this game," Canter said. "He just doesn't fit here. He will report because he is a true professional. The bigger issue here is how the club chooses how to deal with it when he clearly doesn't fit here. Like what the Mets did with Julio Franco, and the A's did with Milton Bradley, and the Angels with Shea Hillenbrand, when a player didn't fit in the organization's plans, they were given the chance to move on. He's a proven player, but he hasn't had the opportunity to play this year in Tampa." Cantu, the team's MVP two seasons ago, demonstrated similar frustration after he didn't make the team out of spring training. He went to Durham to play 1B, but the emergence of Carlos Pena made Cantu expendable. He started only 14 games since being recalled April 24, hitting .207 in 58 at-bats. "Jorge is not happy and that's very understandable," manager Joe Maddon said. "He's a young man and he has a bright future, it's just that right now the situation here does not allow him to play right now based on all the other components we have going on right now." SATURDAY UNVEILED: Either Ryu, 2-3 with a 5.97 ERA at Durham, or Rays long reliever Jason Hammel will start the first game of Saturday's day-night doubleheader in New York, but Maddon said that decision would be based on how the bullpen is used in tonight's series opener against the Yankees. Dohmann, who had a 2.03 ERA in 482/3 innings at Durham, will work out of the bullpen. Following the afternoon game Saturday, the Rays likely will send down a pitcher and activate Durham LHP J.P. Howell to start the night game. "When you have these split doubleheaders and you're trying to fill it up somehow, it can really put a tax on your bullpen," Maddon said. MISCELLANY: LF Carl Crawford was caught stealing for the first time since May 28, snapping a stretch of 18 consecutive stolen bases, one shy of his club record set in 2003. ... RF Delmon Young extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his sixth-inning single, two shy of his season and career high. Young is batting .488 (20-for-41) over that stretch. ... It was the sixth time in club history the Rays had nine or more hits and were shut out. -- If you're not have fun in baseball, you miss the point of everything. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.141.100.55
