Surgery likely to sideline Crawford for rest of regular season

If the Rays hang on for their first AL East division title, they'll likely
have to do it without star Carl Crawford.

The outfielder has decided to have surgery on his injured right hand that
will likely sideline him for the remainder of the regular season. The
operation will be performed on Thursday.

However, Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman
said there's a chance Crawford could return before the season is over.

"If every single thing went extremely well I'd say that there is a chance he
could play in a regular-season game," Friedman said, according to the St.
Petersburg Times. "There's just such a small window that I wouldn't say it's
likely, but there is definitely a chance."

Crawford injured a tendon in his right middle finger making a check swing in
Saturday night's 11-inning win over the Mariners. Crawford said he felt a pop
and his hand was sore.

Friedman said that the team and Crawford opted for surgery after it was
determined that trying to rehabilitate the injury wouldn't be effective.

"It was deemed that it was pretty unlikely that it would fix it, that it
would reoccur, and if it did there was a chance he hurts it worse and it's a
much more involved surgery," Friedman said, according to the St. Petersburg
Times.

Crawford was hitting .273 with eight homers, 57 RBIs and 25 stolen bases at
the time of his injury. Tampa Bay has a three-game lead over Boston in the AL
East. Crawford had hit in his last 11 games, batting .349 during his hitting
streak with five triples.

The Rays are also without All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria, who was
placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a fractured right wrist.
Longoria, who leads the team in home runs and RBIs, is expected to return to
the team before the end of the regular season, however.
