Ruben De La Red Makes Playing Return

After seven months out following a heart scare, the Real Madrid midfielder
returned to action on Tuesday...

Ruben de la Red made his long-awaited comeback in midweek when he appeared in
a friendly encounter and scored after seven months on the sidelines following
a heart scare.

The 23-year-old returned as a substitute in a game for the 4-4-2 Foundation
in Malaga's La Rosaleda stadium and appeared to be delighted to see that his
wait was over.

On October 30 last year, De la Red collapsed during Real Madrid's Copa del
Rey game against Real Union after suffering what doctors diagnosed as a syncope.

Tests were carried out that could not determine the exact cause of the problem
and the player was told he could not return to action until it was ascertained
whether or not playing football would be a danger to him.

Fabio Celestini, the playmaker's former team-mate at Getafe, organised the
match and as well as Real Madrid's Jordi Codina appearing, Emilio Butragueno,
Fernando Hierro and Juan Eduardo Esnaider also played.

De la Red's appearance as he came off the bench was met with a huge ovation as
his months of anguish ended after doctors gave him the green light to begin
playing again.

It proved to be a successful comeback as the midfielder, who helped Spain to
win the European Championships last summer, scored within a minute of going on.

After seven months, the latest round of examinations gave De la Red the
all-clear and he will now be able to become a member of Manuel Pellegrini's
squad next season.
