Profile of Fernando Martin Alvarez, New President of Real Madrid
After accepting Florentino Perez's irreversible resignation, the Real Madrid
Board of Directors has unanimously elected Fernando Martin as the new
President of Real Madrid. Fernando Martin has been a board member since
winning the election in 2000.
In the press conference announcing his resignation, Florentino Perez wished
Fernando Martin lots of luck and courage as the new front man of the Club.
Perez considers Martin the most qualified person for the position. He also
announced that in virtue of the Club's bylaws, Fernando Martin would remain
President until 2008, when the actual term is scheduled to end.
Fernando Martin Alvarez was born in Trigueros del Valle, Valladolid
(Northern Spain) on 30 May, 1947. He graduated with a degree in Chemistry
from the University of Valladolid and acted as political party UCD's regional
secretary until 1982. He moved to Madrid in 1983 and started working in real
estate, where he was named Assistant Director, General Director, and
President of several undertakings. He founded the company Martinsa in the
final months of 1991.
Fernando Martin was a part of Florentino Perez's first and second
candidacies to Real Madrid's presidency, having lost in 1995 and won in 2000.
He also joined Florentino Perez in 2004, when the incumbent was reelected
with 95% of Real Madrid's member votes. Fernando Martin has always occupied
a director's role in the Club.
In 1991 he created the Martinsa real estate group, its primary focus being
the residential market in Madrid. Martin is one of the most prominent land
owners in Spain. He also controls 3% of Spanish energy company Union Fenosa,
and just under 1% of Spanish telephone giant Telefónica, and Spanish banks
BBVA and Banco Santander. In 2005 he signed a joint venture with real estate
company Nozar, owned by Luis Nozaleda, to develop urban projects in Madrid.
Between June 2004 and June 2005 Martin was a member of the Board of
Directors of Sacyr Vallermoso owing to the 6% stake in he owned in the
company.
