WORLD SOCCER: In what ways can the Real Madrid that lost the League and Cup last season improve this time out? Vicente del Bosque: For the past few seasons we have been playing a style of football that has been recognized throughout Europe as being some of the best on the continent, which for me is a big compliment but perhaps has been recognized more outside Spain than inside. Last year we may not have been brilliant in the Final of the King's Cup but we were brilliant in the rest of the competition. This season we are a stronger, more secure team with even more quality and with a stronger defense. Will it be a failure if you don't win the League and/or the Champions League this season given the stars at your disposal? Both the team and myself are being judged constantly. Every week, with every game, we face a trial or examination of a different sort. People always demand that Real win titles and if we don't win any we will have to reflect on that at the end of the season. So I can't deny that it will be painful if we have nothing to show for this season. From what you have seen so far of the Champions League, who do you think will be the major threats to Real retaining their crown? We have all been surprised by the situation in which Bayern Munich have found themselves this season. On paper they appeared to be the strongest team in the competition but they have struggled and failed to qualify for the second group phase, which has been a shock. As for the other threats, the traditional big teams in the competition, such as Manchester United, Milan - who have started superbly - and Arsenal will be hard to beat, as will the other Spanish sides. And which sides are likely to challenge for the Spanish League? Hopefully, ourselves - but look at the range of quality teams in Spain and you can see why there is equality in the First Division at the moment. There is not a single easy game and it will be a very close-fought battle this season. Is the Spanish League the strongest in the world? I believe so, and this isn't just my opinion; the evidence is there for all to see. In both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup our teams are doing very well, and these are incontrovertible facts. Spanish clubs have dominated European competition in recent years, and this season looks like being another good one. How big a priority is the World Club Cup? We are very keen to win it again, just as we are the Spanish League, the Champions League and the King's Cup. The World Club Cup is more of a strategic objective, a one-off game that crops up at a particular point in the season. It is a bit like the European Supercup, which we had never won before this year. What do you know about your opponents, Olimpia? I have to admit that we know very little about Olimpia, apart from the international players in their team. But when we get nearer the time and focus on the game we will have reports and information about them that will enable us to plan our approach properly. *This is an extract from an interview published in World Soccer.
