Pedroia showed up at camp overweight and then hurt his left shoulder at the
start of the exhibition season. He made it back in mid-April, but he didn’t
really start hitting until June. With an average approaching .350 over the
last month, it’s possible that he could help the Red Sox as a bench player
in August. Despite a lack of home run power and speed, Pedroia should be a
fine regular at second base. He’s somewhat similar to the player he could
replace next year, Mark Loretta. Pedroia should hit .280-.290 and draw enough
walks to be a .370 OBP guy. He doesn’t have the range to be an everyday
shortstop, but he can play there if needed and he’s an above average second
baseman. The Red Sox should let Loretta move on this winter and allow Pedroia
to compete for a starting job next spring.

The Red Sox likely would have taken Trevor Crowe had he fallen to them in the
2005 draft. Instead, they ended up with Ellsbury. Both were outstanding
outfielders for Pac 10 schools. Crowe has the advantage of being a switch-
hitter and probably has the majority of the offensive potential. Ellsbury, a
left-handed hitter, is the better defender. His offensive numbers at
Wilmington were quite impressive given the environment there, so the Red
Sox announced Wednesday that they were promoting him to Double-A. Ellsbury
isn't going to hit for much power in the majors, but he might get on base 36-37
percent of the time and become a solid leadoff hitter. There’s little doubt
that he’ll be able to stay in center field. The Red Sox might not need him
in 2008, but he’ll probably be ready then.
