Franklin Morales was surprised when Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine pulled
him aside Saturday and said he would be starting against the Cubs Sunday
night.

“Before, I was younger,’’ he said. “I tried to do too much. Now I have my
stuff and I can take the hitter out. My command, I’m consistent with my
pitches.’’

As to how long he can go, Morales ventured no guesses.

“I’ll try to do my job,’’ he said. “I’ll try to make my pitches. If I
feel consistency with what I’m doing, I’ll let [Valentine] know if I can
keep going.

“I’m going to try to do what I can do and try to control what I can control
- throw strikes and try and take the hitter out.’’

Morales has allowed one earned run in 11 innings on the road this season,
another good reason to give him a shot against the Cubs.

“I feel confident,’’ he said.

Former major league pitcher Curt Schilling has taken a leave of absence from
his role as an ESPN baseball analyst in order to focus on business issues.

According to a Boston Globe report, Schilling is being sued for $2.4 million
by RBS Citizens, better known as Citizens Bank, in loans made to his video
game company, 38 Studios.

An ESPN spokesman said he expects Schilling to return later this season.

fastball has been 90-94 mph. “His fastball is pretty electric. He hides the

it to both sides of the plate. It’s worked well with his curveball. He’s

7-0 loss. “It’s just a matter of putting it together for longer periods of

“I felt great,” Ranaudo said after the game. “I was attacking the zone,
able to command both sides of the plate with my fastball and throw my
changeup and my curveball for strikes. I had some pretty good success.”
