A common complaint about the modern game is that players aren't as good or as
consistent or as productive as they used to be.

Put simply, they don't make 'em like they used to.

And that's the remarkable thing about the tandem of David Ortiz and Manny
Ramirez: These two aren't out of place when it comes time to discuss the best
3-4 combinations in the game's history.

Are they more prolific than Willie Mays-Willie McCovey? Or Roger Maris-Mickey
Mantle? That's for historians to decide. But it's clear they're worthy of
inclusion in the same argument.

Ortiz and Ramirez are in their fourth year together in Boston, although for the
first two months of the 2003 season, Ortiz's first in Boston, Ortiz fought for
playing time with the likes of Shea Hillenbrand and Jeremy Giambi.
But when Hillenbrand was dealt to Arizona and Giambi was injured, Ortiz emerged
as an everyday player and, with Ramirez, began to form one of the most powerful
and consistent run-producing combinations in baseball.

If there's an explanation for Ortiz's advantage in RBI, it's this: Ramirez
regularly has to bat with the bases empty after Ortiz has cleared them, or
circled them himself with a solo homer.

"They're both such good hitters, I'm not sure how you pitch to them," one major
league advance scout said. "I've kind of given up. If one doesn't get you, the
other will."

"Sixty years from now," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said, "they could
be talked about the way people talk about [Babe] Ruth and [Lou] Gehrig. And if
not Ruth-Gehrig, then certainly they've got to be mentioned as one of the all-
time top 10 hitting combinations."

大部分的球隊只要有其中一名slugger在打線中就會很滿足了,可見紅襪是多麼的幸運能同

There's a certain symmetry to their presence. Both Dominican by birth --
Ramirez came to the U.S. as a school-age boy and grew up in New York -- they
are as different as they are alike. Ramirez is right-handed, Ortiz a lefty.
Though both are playful, Ramirez is mostly silent with the media while Ortiz
seems to enjoy the give-and-take with reporters.

In the offseason, Ramirez has been known to visit South America; Ortiz
willingly spends part of the winter in frozen Wisconsin -- his wife's home --
and is an ardent Green Bay Packers fan.

兩個人有許多相似之處,都是多明尼加裔--Manny在學生時代來到紐約讀書--也有許多相異

In the batter's box, Ortiz has been known to take vicious, violent swings while
Ramirez is more apt to take a smoother, more relaxed path to the ball. Both use
the entire field and are capable of driving the ball the other way. Ortiz, like
other great Red Sox lefty hitters before him, learned to take full advantage of
Fenway Park's inviting wall in left, and Ramirez regularly powers line drives
to the right-center gap.

As a full-time DH, Ortiz has the luxury of watching video between at-bats and
making adjustments from at-bat to at-bat. Ramirez must do his video homework
before the game and, despite his sometimes goofy and indifferent public persona,
has a more scholarly approach at the plate.

ruse.

In recent weeks, the pair has been more invaluable than ever because of the
injury-depleted lineup that has been without Trot Nixon (customarily the fifth
hitter in the Sox order, behind Ramirez) and Jason Varitek. Still, the two have
flourished, carrying the Red Sox offense even as the pitching staff falters.

Earlier this season, Ortiz produced four walk-off hits in two weeks,
demonstrating a remarkable penchant for producing in the team's final at-bat,
when he's needed most.

Ramirez and Ortiz actually were flip-flopped earlier in their time together in
Boston, but in spring 2005, manager Terry Francona permanently installed Ortiz
as the No. 3 hitter and Ramirez in the cleanup hole. Both hitters would prefer
to hit fourth, but because Ramirez is more temperamental and Ortiz more
easygoing, Francona chose the path of least resistance.
