Youkilis takes Tigers' closer deep to seal dramatic victory

DETROIT -- Down to their last out Friday night at Comerica Park, the Red Sox
had already seen one towering drive fall for naught an inning earlier. So there
would be no premature celebration until the blast by Kevin Youkilis landed
safely over the wall.

Todd Jones that overturned a one-run deficit and sparked the Red Sox to a 3-2
victory over the Tigers.

The home run was No. 14 lifetime for Youkilis, and certainly his biggest.

about it. Luckily the ball stayed up in the zone and hit the top part of my bat
 and got out of here. I thought [Monroe] was going to make a play on it."

Consider the events of an inning earlier and it made the blast by Youkilis that
 much sweeter. David Ortiz had clocked a 425-foot drive off Tigers reliever
Joel Zumaya to left-center with two outs for what would have been a two-run
homer in almost any park this side of Yellowstone National. But in the
cavernous confines of Comerica, it was nothing more than a frustrating out.

but to the right part of the ballpark. [Bench coach Brad Mills] was yelling,
but this ballpark holds a lot of balls. So I was glad when I saw it bounce [off
the bullpen railing]."

The heroic shot by Youkilis would not have been possible without Mike Lowell.
With two outs and nobody on in the ninth, Lowell offered the first bit of life
in the comeback, raking a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a single.

Lowell wasn't even a sure thing to play in this game after injuring his left
hamstring on Wednesday night in Toronto. Not only did he play, but he produced
three hits, the last of which was a biggie. Willie Harris pinch-ran for Lowell
and rode in on the long ball by Youkilis.

hit."

There weren't a whole lot of pitches to hit in this one. Not with veterans Curt
Schilling (six innings, seven hits, two runs, no walks and eight Ks) and Kenny
Rogers (seven innings, five hits, one run and seven Ks) locked in a tense duel.
While the battle of aces was the story early, both pitchers took no-decisions
in a game that was decided late.

Jonathan Papelbon slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two
 of the three batters he faced and improving to 20-for-20 in saves. Rudy Seanez
 earned the win, his first of the season.

"Awesome win, that's an awesome win," said Schilling. "I've been saying it for

The Tigers jumped out for a quick run against Schilling in the bottom of the
first, getting an RBI double by Placido Polanco and then an RBI double from
Marcus Thames.

left by Manny Ramirez.

slid in safely to make it 2-1.

when it happened."

And before Youkilis had the thrill of going deep, his night had been filled
with frustration. There were three futile at-bats and then a dropped throw at
first base on a strong throw by shortstop Alex Cora that should have ended the
bottom of the eighth inning. Seanez did manage to navigate around the error and
not give up a run, but Youkilis was still miffed at himself. 
在還沒打出全壘打之前，Youkilis今夜本來會充滿沮喪。不僅因為可能有三支徒勞的打

In actuality, Youkilis did the only thing he could.

the top of that bullpen out there. It had been a rough day at the yard. I'm
just glad it ended [well] for us."
