Pauley solid in Sox loss to Yanks

NEW YORK -- One night after Josh Beckett was knocked around Yankee Stadium,
rookie David Pauley gave the Boston pitching staff a much-needed pleasant
surprise on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Red Sox hitters could not rise to the occasion. Jason Giambi
worked a two-out, bases-loaded walk against Rudy Seanez to force in the
go-ahead run, then Melky Cabrera robbed Manny Ramirez of a certain game-tying
home run with a spectacular catch as the Yankees claimed their second straight
win over Boston, 2-1.

Ramirez drove a Kyle Farnsworth pitch to left-center. Cabrera timed his leap
perfectly and brought the ball back from over the wall, with a jubilant Johnny
Damon looking on as Cabrera fell back to the warning track with the ball still
in his glove.

The catch spoiled a great performance by Pauley (0-1). After giving up 11 hits
and six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings last Wednesday in Toronto, he fared much
better in his second career Major League outing.

Entering the seventh, the New York offense, without Derek Jeter for the second
straight night, was able to muster just a Bernie Williams solo homer leading
off the fifth. Pauley had held the Yankees to just six hits over six innings
while allowing one run.

But with two outs and none on in the seventh, the Yankees rallied to load the
bases on two hits and a walk to Cabrera. Seanez relieved Pauley and walked
Jason Giambi on a 3-2 pitch to force in Miguel Cairo, whose infield single
started the rally.
但在第七局壘上無人兩出局時，洋基重整旗鼓；藉著兩支安打和對Cabrera的保送造成
