Beckett leaves with cut on finger after dominant showing

ANAHEIM -- One of these days, the Red Sox will rediscover a stress-free victory
. For now, as they climb out of a sizable hole in the standings, they will sett
le for the cliffhangers. For the second night in a row, the Red Sox prevailed i
n a game that felt as much like a survival test as a win. Nonetheless, they did
record the 2-1 victory in the rubber match of this three-game series against t
he Angels on Thursday at Angel Stadium.

ing the phenom's bid to become the first rookie starter in American League hist
ory to start his career 10-0.

middle finger. Considering Beckett's history with blisters, the Red Sox weren't
going to take any chances.

in 1938. Of Ortiz's 46 blasts this season, 26 have either tied the game or put
the Red Sox ahead, tying St. Louis masher Albert Pujols for the Major League l
ead in that category.

rlando Cabrera. But Cabrera, instead of flipping to second base, tried to beat
Alex Cora in a footrace to the bag. Cora won the race and made a terrific takeo
ut slide, making it safe to second, with Mirabelli being thrown out at first an
d Mike Lowell scoring from third to make it 2-0.
