They were in first place at the All-Star break. They were in first place,
though not by much, at the July 31 trade deadline.
All the earmarks were there for a fourth consecutive October of meaningful
games for the Red Sox, and then, it all fell apart.

Some of what happened was out of the team's control. For example, David Ortiz

Defining moment: Manager Terry Francona posted a lineup card the night of
Aug. 28 that didn't include David Ortiz or Manny Ramirez. It was the first
time the Red Sox played a meaningful game without both of their star sluggers
since the start of the 2003 season, and indicative of the way things would go
for the rest of the season. Injuries mounted beyond belief and the Red Sox
never had a chance to climb their way out of the hole they dug when they were
semi-healthy.

What went right: The one constant all year long was spectacular infield
defense. Mike Lowell and Alex Gonzalez showed Sox fans the type of mastery
that became common place for so long in South Florida. Mark Loretta was a
sure-handed rock at second and Kevin Youkilis was better than anyone expected
at first.

FORECAST FOR 2007

2007年球季前瞻

Lineup: The monster 3-4 combo of Ortiz and Ramirez is expected to be back for
a fifth consecutive season. The Red Sox might go with a 1-2 combo of Coco
Crisp and Youkilis. Jason Varitek will be back behind the plate, and Mike
Lowell is expected to return as the third baseman. There is uncertainty at
second base, shortstop and right field.

打線:由Ortiz和Ramirez組成猶如怪獸般三四棒連線,預期將在明年開始他們連續第五個球

Rotation: Ace Curt Schilling will be back for what he has said time and again
will be his final season in the Major Leagues. Josh Beckett, inconsistent in
his first year in Boston but also the team leader in wins, will once again
ride shotgun. Jonathan Papelbon, who was brilliant as the rookie closer this
season, will move to the rotation, where he could potentially provide a big
lift.

The Red Sox are expected to pick up the $4 million option on knuckleballer
Tim Wakefield, solidifying his 13th year in a Boston uniform. Matt Clement,
who underwent extensive surgery on his shoulder, will likely miss a good
chunk of 2007. Lester finished his rookie year undergoing chemotherapy
treatment for lymphoma and there's no precise time-table for his return. Kyle
Snyder will likely be brought back as a swingman.

reconstruction, particularly with Papelbon defecting to the rotation. Epstein
will look far and wide for a new closer, as it's doubtful the solution will
come from within.

Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen both offered glimpses of excellence, but
need to develop more consistency. Venerable Mike Timlin is a free agent but
would like to pitch another season so he can reach 1,000 career appearances.
It remains to be seen whether that can happen in Boston.

Erstwhile closer Keith Foulke battled injuries all year, but finished the
season on a strong note. He might get a chance to win his old job back in the
spring. The Red Sox were hurt by their lack of a quality lefty, so it's
conceivable they'll find one.

tough to fill in the bullpen, but Epstein will look anywhere and everywhere
to find power arms. This winter's free agent market is shallow when it comes
to closers, so trades will likely be the avenue pursued by Epstein.

Prospect to watch: The Red Sox spent much of September evaluating second
baseman Dustin Pedroia. At times, the diminutive right-handed hitter showed
why he has come through the Minor Leagues with such rave reviews. There were
also times it remained unclear if he will be ready to be an everyday player
in 2007.

後起之秀:紅襪花了大半個九月來觀察二壘手Pedroia的表現.有時這位年輕的右打者告訴
