Harvard Business School Case Study
Learn business English through Harvard Business School cases:
in this course, we will be analyzing 5 case studies.
The cases provide a valuable learning experience in exploring
the logic underlying critical managerial issues. This course
can serve as preparation for a MBA program or simply a way to
augment both your English skills as well as your business
knowledge. Your active participation and meaningful contribution
in English are a must. Out interest is not “right” or “wrong”
answers, it is whether you have moved the class forward in discussion.
Each student is required to turn in a 1 page case write-up each week,
in English. We will be taking a global perspective by studying
businesses from various countries.
Case 1: Dell Business Model (USA) Summary:
Founded in 1984, Dell Corp. has achieved phenomenal growth,
and by 2000 had topped $25 billion in sales and over $2 billion
in net income. In the 4th quarter of 2000, however, the PC industry's
average 30-year growth rate crashed to a negative 10%. Questions for
Discussion:
1) Does the PC industry still generate high margins?
2) What do you think are Dell’s recipes for high margins?
3) Describe Dell’s business model and related strategic activity system.
Case 2: Shouldice Hospital Limited (Canada) A hospital specializing in
hernia operations is considering whether and how to expand the reach of
its services.
1) Model Shouldice Hospital as a processing operation with inputs,
outputs and resources.
2) As Dr. Shouldice, what actions, if any, would you take to expand the
hospital’s capacity?
3) Can the capacity of the rest of Shouldice keep up?
Case 3: ITC eChoupal Initiative (India) The eChoupal has reengineered the
antiquated soybean export supply chain using digital technology in rural
farm villages by providing farmers with effective methods of price discovery,
honest trading, and information sharing to the benefit of all in the channel.
This case discusses the achievement, opportunities, and challenges of the
managers of the new supply chain.
1) What were the old and new physical and information flows in the channel?
2) How does IT add (or not) value for each of the stakeholders in the
eChoupal story?
Case 4: NTT DoCoMo: Marketing i-mode (Japan) i-mode is a wireless Internet
service offered in Japan by NTT DoCoMo. In just three years, the service has
won over 30 million subscribers and achieved a 60% share of Japan's mobile
Internet market, making it the most successful mobile data service in the
world.
1) What is the strategic position of i-mode?
2) What are the environmental and firm factors that contribute to the success
of i-mode?
3) Can you draw the strategic activity system for i-mode?
Case 5: Zara- Fast Fashion (Spain) Focuses on Inditex, an apparel retailer
from Spain, which has set up an extremely quick response system for its ZARA
chain. Instead of predicting months before a season starts what women will
want to wear, ZARA observes what's selling and what's not and continuously
adjusts what it produces and merchandises on that basis. Powered by ZARA's
success, Inditex has expanded into 39 countries, making it one of the most
global retailers in the world.
1) What are Zara's competitive advantages?
2) How did Zara build such advantages?
3) Zara is planning to come to Taiwan to open a store at 微風廣場.
What are your recommendations?
