First of all, I would like you to give a short description of your musical
career.
Kelvis Answer: I started out in high school. I was singing in a Gospel Group
named MEEKNESS. The group consisted of my brother Kendall, my older sister, a
family friend and myself. That was a long time ago. We traveled the world and
had a great time. It wasn't until we decided to move from Denver, Colorado to
Nashville Tennessee that I started working at a major record label as well as
form Kloud 9 with my brother Kendall. We're looking for big things to happen,
but we'll be more than satisfied to warm the hearts of a select few!
Kendall Answer: Well, we've been in the business for quite some time, we
started out in a Gospel group and then we both got involved on the industry
side of things working for Major labels in the states doing Radio Promotions
and Artist Development, now we're back on the artist/creative side of things
again but this time doing smooth soul.
Then I would like to know how you ended up with the label Expansion Records
in England?
Kelvis Answer: To be honest, it was all Kendall's doing! Well I had taken
some time way from the American scene back in 1999 and lived in the UK for a
short while. It was then that I heard about Ralph Tee's label Expansion and
took some music to him. He put one of our tunes on a compilation project
entitled Soul Stepp'n. Our relationship continued over the years and we
eventually signed an album deal with Expansion.
The album "On kloud 9" doesn’t sound like anything else on the average top
100 R&B chart, how come?
Kelvis Answer: We try to be different in our style and approach to soul
music. Most of today's artists that are doing soul music are trying to
recreate a 70?s sound and we try to keep it 80's style.
Kendall Answer: I'd have to say that most of the music on the top 100 R&B is
very trendy and time sensitive. When we made this record we tried to make
timeless quality music, and didn't try to copy what was on the charts..
Because of that we know that people who buy our music are buying it because
the truly love the music, and not because it's the 'in' thing at the moment.
It?s a bit of a gamble but we'd rather make music that's true to how we feel
than make a record trying to copy last years hits..
In my opinion you have done an incredible piece of work, blending different
types off style (Soul, Jazz, Gospel, contemporary R&B) . Is that how you like
your soul music?
Kelvis Answer: Most definitely. You have to take those chances in order to
get the unique sound and style that sets you a part from others.
Kendall Answer: I feel music should not have boundaries.. It's an expression
of the soul. Some days you feel happy some days your sad.. some days you're
in love some days you're not? I think as an artist you always draw from other
great artist and some of what you draw from other artists comes across in
what you do.
Who is your favourite artist at this moment? And who is your overall
favourite artist?
Kelvis Answer: I have several artists that I'm attracted to at the moment.
I'd say Jill Scott, India Arie, Frank McComb. Overall: Stevie Wonder,
Incognito, Sade, Anita Baker, The Isley Brothers, The Whipsers and Michael
Jackson.
Kendall Answer: At the Moment, India Arie and Donell Jones. Overall: That's a
hard one.. Anita Baker, Incognito, Sade, The Isley Brothers, Michael
Jackson..
Finally,I would like you to do a top 10 of you favourite albums.
Kelvis Answer: My answer is the same as Kendall's. We have the same tastes
when it comes to good old-fashioned soul, pop, jazz and neo soul music.
Kendall Answer: Ok that's another hard one: 1. Off The Wall (Michael Jackson)
2. Rapture (Anita Baker) 3. Number 7 (Commissioned) 4. Love Deluxe (Sade) 5.
Love Songs (Isley Brothers) 6. Tribes,Vibes and Scibes (Incognito) 7. Take 6
(Take 6) 8. Bebe and Cece Winans ( Bebe and Cece Winans) 9. Anthology
(Ambrosia) 10. On Kloud 9 (Kloud 9)
Best wishes and good luck with your outstanding album.
