從文章封面大的誇張的 Album Cover 以及讚頌的標題，你應該可以知道我已經中
Savatage 的毒很深了。所以本篇的結論就是 (如果不想看下面長篇介紹的話)：趕快買
來聽就對了，絕對是值得收藏的專輯。

Savatage？好歹我聽金屬也八年了，這個樂團我還真的沒什麼聽過... 金屬版上也沒有什
麼討論，但我會知道有這個樂團是因為 Megadeth 的 「The World Needs A Hero」專輯
側標中，介紹新吉他手 Al Pitrelli 是從 Savatage 挖來的，除此之外，我連 Savatage
是玩什麼曲風、哪一國的我都沒概念。

哈哈，我真是孤陋寡聞，這麼棒的樂團現在才認識，好久沒有這種聽一張專輯就深深中毒
，然後就瘋狂的想收完其它張專輯的衝動，上一次是 Opeth，再上一次是 Metallica，最
早的是 Bryan Adams。

Savatage 的樂風是 Progressive/Power/Opera Metal，和另外兩個美國前衛大哥
Queensryche, Fates Warning 同時期，都是在前衛金屬正蓬勃發展時的先鋒。樂團的創
立者是 Jon Oliva (Vocal/Piano), Criss Oliva (Guitar) 這對兄弟倆，早期深受
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen 等樂團的影響，前幾張專輯有這些樂團的影子
卻還沒有建立自己獨特的風格，走的是 Power/Speed Metal 樂風 (其實我前三張都沒聽
過啦)，直到遇到 Paul O'Neill 這個伯樂製作人，幫他們找到屬於自己的成功道路，也
就是後期著名的融合古典旋律與劇情式的前衛金屬。

Paul 從 「Hall of the Mountain King」這張專輯開始，每張專輯都由他操刀。山大王
的大廳這張專輯可以說是 Savatage 往前衛邁進的轉折點，以鋼琴和古典樂融入美式強力
金屬的風格也逐漸成形。這張專輯有著爽快的吉他 riff，鼓點變拍以及 Jon 飛行在雲端
的聲線，鋼琴與交響樂也在許多歌曲中出現，整張專輯聽來十分爽快，旋律也很令人印象
深刻。

有了山大王這張成功的轉變，「Gutter Ballet」更將鋼琴與古典樂運用的更臻完美，出
現了 Savatage 第一張經典專輯。Jon 優美的鋼琴旋律與古典樂的編曲風格，加上誇張地
歌劇式演唱，以及 Criss 獨具個人風格的吉他演奏，都是這張專輯成功的因素。專輯裡
多少優美的旋律都成為樂迷心中永遠的紀念... 因為 Criss 在 93 年因車禍喪生，如此
動人旋律都只能成為追憶，或許因為這樣，Savatage 也多了點傳奇的色彩。

這兩張專輯逐漸醞釀接下來這張作品的成功，「Streets: A Rock Opera」可說是
Savatage 最佳的代表作，從這張專輯開始認識 Savatage 是個非常好的開始。

「Streets」 是一張概念性的專輯，故事內容是根據他們的製作人 Paul 的著作，Criss
覺得把這個故事用音樂呈現會是個不錯的想法，這張專輯於是誕生。在這張專輯發行的前
三年，Queensryche 的「Operation: Mindcrime」可能也是很好的啟發，讓許多樂團都用
音樂呈現劇情，但說到概念性專輯，看到的不外乎是 The Who, Pink Floyd,
Queensryche, Dream Theater 等樂團的那四張專輯，我到沒看過「Streets」和上列專輯
齊名過。或許和歷史重要性與樂風突破性有很大關係，「Streets」似乎稱不上跨時代的
經典作品，即使如此，還是無法掩滅這張專輯散發的光芒，以及「Streets」那觸動人心
的感動。

故事的主軸是一個搖滾巨星 D.T. Jesus (D.T.是 Down Town 或 De-Tox 的縮寫，也有人
說 D.T. Jesus 其實就是 Jon Oliva 的投影) 的興衰殞落，故事的場景在充滿繁華與墮
落的紐約街頭，所以這張專輯也以「Streets」為名，我覺得是非常適切的，Jon 也說他
非常不喜歡 "A Rock Opera" 這個註解，反而顯得畫蛇添足且破壞氣氛。說到這裡，你可
能會想到 「The Wall」也是一個搖滾巨星 Pink 的故事，「The Wall」所探討的個人精
神層面與社會問題都有很深刻的描寫，且是 Waters 的成長經驗的縮影，在故事複雜與深
度上，「Streets」顯然是比較容易吸收的，就像看齣大眾電影，劇情是不需要你苦惱推
敲的，重點是他呈現的效果。既然是個搖滾歌劇，劇情與音樂的結合是非常的重要的，我
覺得這個連結 Savatage 做得非常好，聽者很容易地被帶入主角的情緒，高興、憤怒、悲
傷、沒落、希望都隨著 Jon 戲劇性的歌聲與適時的音樂搭配而展露無遺，甚至在一首歌
裡面就可以嘗一次酸甜苦辣的感受。而其他搖滾歌劇會讓人挑剔的一點是，音樂與劇情的
連結性是否平衡，若只一味炫技，每首歌都來個精采的樂器獨奏，但似乎在劇情的情緒中
是不太必要的，忘記情盡乎辭才是最適當的表現。

這張專輯的名稱原本是想取作「Gutter Ballet」，是上一張專輯的名稱也是 Paul 原著
的書名，不過後來當然沒有這樣取。而原本這張專輯是打算當作雙 CD 發行，但唱片公司
顯然不喜歡這樣的想法，於是有很多歌曲沒有收錄在「Streets」裡，團員對這樣的發行
不甚滿意。而似乎也沒有機會看到完整版「Streets」的發行了，因為多數沒有收錄的歌
曲都拿去給後面專輯用了，所以也只有 Savatage 知道雙 CD 的感覺會是怎樣吧。但在
 1997 年重新發行的版本，多收錄一首 "Desiree"，這首歌當時沒收錄在單 CD 版本，如
此動人心弦的歌曲如果能放在完整的「Streets」裡面該有多好呢。

在「Streets」發行之後，Jon 就離團專心搞自己的 side-project 樂團 Doctor Butcher 以及百老匯音樂 Romanov，後來 Criss 和 Paul 找來了 Zachary "Zak"
Stevens 擔任主唱。不過 93 年 Criss 意外逝世後，Jon 又回到 Savatage 擔任鍵盤及
曲目編寫的工作 (我想也是要維持 Savatage 來紀念自己的弟弟吧)。

聽這張專輯猶如在聽百老匯歌劇 Live CD 版，但閉上眼睛，彷彿瞬間置身於紐約黑暗潮
濕的街道，D.T. Jesus 的故事就在眼前上演... 太陽下山了，街燈一盞一盞亮了，小孩
集群嬉鬧玩樂，而陰暗的角落有個落寞的人...

1. Streets

一開始是兒童唱詩班優美的合唱 (引用 Mozart - The Magic Flute)，似乎是附近教堂傳
出的聲音，接著晶瑩剔透的聲音透露出整個黑夜的寧靜與神秘，D.T. Jesus 猙獰的聲音
畫破這寧靜，接下來是超厚重的吉他 riff，我覺得是整張專輯最沉重的 riff，非常震撼
。這首歌將整張專輯的場景交代的很清楚，D.T. Jesus 的憎恨多少也反映紐約的現況。

These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake

D.T. Jesus 強烈咆嘯的聲音與合唱團似乎進行激烈的控訴，充分表現 D.T. Jesus 淪落
街頭的憤怒與墮落。最後的結尾又回到清脆的玻璃音與孩童天真的玩樂聲音，D.T.
Jesus 似乎已經安靜下來，我也以為差不多結束了，但隨著吉他擾人的亂竄，D.T.
Jesus 再度爆發...

2. Jesus Saves

接下來場景似乎來到車水馬龍的街道上，一開始是一個遊蕩街友 (Bum) 一個人的對話，
內容是跟一個陌生人介紹他的朋友 D.T. Jesus，一個當地的毒販...

接著吉他 riff 出現，Jon 開始唱出 D.T. Jesus 的興衰故事，他曾是紅極一時的搖滾巨
星，台下樂迷叫囂的 "Jesus Saves" 曾經震耳欲聾，但事情卻慢慢變了樣...

So the dice were cast
Today became the past
Jesus just disappeared
He was headed for New York
Or so his little label thought
And there he gave away the years

Last seen drinking wine
Beneath a flashing sign
Promising salvation to strays

D.T. Jesus 從紐約城市中消失。

3. Tonight He Grins Again

這首歌一開始就是柔美的鋼琴聲，Jon 唱出 D.T. Jeuse 的孤寂與落寞，相當動人心弦
... "Time Time Time Again" 那段的激昂與 "Tonight He Grins Again" 的無奈，這兩
句歌詞唱的實在太銷魂了...

Nighttime again
Seems I'm my only friend
Wander the streets all alone
The lost in search of his own

Time and time and time again
I'm just looking for a friend
But no one seems to be around
Except this monkey that I've found
Still he is my only friend
And tonight he grins again

4. Strange Reality

奇怪的真實感，對自我的迷惑無所適從，"這會是我嗎?"

Wake every morning
I don't know where I've been
All my excuses
Showing strain wearing thin

Am I losing my way
This strange insanity
An illusion away
Is this reality

Could that be me

5. A Little too Far

聽過這首歌的人還沒有不被感動到的... (樣本數一) 整首歌由 Jon 自彈自唱，優美的鋼
琴旋律與充滿盼望的嗓音，我們似乎越來越來遠了，能否回到從前... 聽了整顆心都融化
了...

With years to burn
And years to trash
Living lies based on flash
But somehow reaching for the stars
I think we went a bit too far

Got to get back
Got to get back
I never meant to take it this far

And all those things we thought we'd learned
As we watched our bridges burn
While standing in the afterglow
I guess we gave them quite a show

就是這句 "Got to get back"... 這麼簡單卻動人的旋律，第一次就深深地感動我...

6. You're Alive

D.T. Jesus 回到這個他曾經埋葬過去的地方，等著他的卻是新聞媒體無情的訕笑，但歌
迷卻給他最溫暖的懷抱... D.T. Jesue 儘管往前吧，忘記以前的種種，你已經復活了。

When you're skating on ice too thin to take it
You got to move fast or else you break it
So throw back your hair and feel the wind rush by

So people take care when you're chasing a dream in the night
That the walls of the past don't interrupt your flight
Never stop never turn
Never look never learn
So they say
But somewhere in time we all pay
For yesterday

歌曲很短很快，交代劇情的功用比較大。

7. Sammy and Tex

這首歌又快歌詞又多，劇情交代很多，而音樂上很有速度與力道。劇情是 Sammy 跟
D.T. Jesus 要錢，因為 D.T. Jesus 之前欠他一屁股債，本金加利息越滾越多。Sammy
與 D.T. Jesus 激烈的扭打起來，直到 Tex (應該是 D. T. Jesus 的朋友吧) 進門來，
抓住 Sammy 的喉嚨就像衣架上的大衣，似乎 Tex 佔了優勢，但卻被 Sammy 暗藏的刀子
刺死... D.T. Jesus 眼見朋友被殺害，心中痛苦扭絞，對 Tex 的死去無法承受...

8. St. Patrick's

Hey there Lord it's me
I wondered if you're free
Or not asleep
This just won't keep
It seems I just don't see

主阿，你能聽到我的呼喚嗎？為何我們所期願的所渴望的都像無聲的文字消逝於空氣中？
為什麼讓我們的夢想碰面而你卻不幫一點忙？你說我們要付出但你卻甚麼都不做，只是個
死雕像？你奪去我所有的名聲但誰會收到責難，全是那些不該受到責難的人阿！我可否厭
倦你不相信你？但我求你讓時間回到最初，改變整個命運，解釋這一切... 主阿...

D.T. Jesus 從寄望主到怒罵主最後又只能乞求主，這種求助無援的無助感很深刻的在歌
曲裡面表現，音樂也隨著 D.T. Jesus 的情緒起伏，尤其在怪罪主的那個橋段，交響樂如
大雨磅礡灑下，情緒到達最高點，卻又馬上回到無助的乞求，情緒轉換之激烈實在精采。

9. Can You Hear Me Now

I have walked this stage
As the music played
They knew every word
But they never heard
For they never changed
It's all very strange
As I'm standing here
Contemplating years

And can you hear me now
Or are there just too many doors
Between then and now
For me to ever reach on through
And pull you back somehow
But that don't happen anymore

你是否能聽到我的聲音，或者我們之間有太多緊閉的門。這歌充滿奇怪的感覺。

10. New York City Don't Mean Nothing

紐約市什麼也不是。一開始以空心吉他開場，唱著自己在紐約的現狀，接著情緒直轉，大
聲撻伐紐約市的不是，不要相信這裡的花花綠綠的一切。或許紐約市民比較有感觸吧。

Don't mean nothing
Just a good place when you're running
Light that cut so bright they make you bleed

Never sleep alone on the subways
Never walk alone on the tracks
Never take a ride to the edge of your mind
Not unless you have a ticket back

11. Ghost in the Ruins

我是廢墟裡的王，我拋售我的夢想... 其實是廢墟裡的  遊魂。

Ghost in the ruins
I'm runnin' the street scene
Ghost in the ruins

12. If I Go Away

又是一首優美的抒情歌，優美的鋼琴與哀傷的嗓音，再度感動人心。

If I go away
What would still remain of me?
The ghost within your eyes
The whisper in your sighs

Believe
And I'm always there

如果我走了，有什麼東西會留下嗎? 相信我，我總是在這裡。

Forever is a long time they say

永遠是很難預期的事，或許有天我們再相遇，能否重新開始？

真是一首無敵情歌大芭樂，硬漢柔情更加刻骨銘心阿，Criss 的吉他旋律真是要人記住他
一輩子阿。

12. Agony and Ecstacy

痛苦與狂喜。D.T. Jesus 操控著歌迷的靈魂，花光你的錢來買票吧，聽我在台上高聲歌
唱，靈魂都交給我吧，你們需要我的，我是你們的痛苦與狂喜。這首歌是非常爽的金屬歌
，厚重的 power chord 與像發了瘋的吉他亂竄，加上 Jon 囂張的唱腔，實在很爽。這首
歌也是最後一首激烈的金屬歌，後面幾首都營造完美的結束。

Listen now the time is right
And what a way to start the night

好心提醒一下，如果你們需要我，我便在此。

14. Heal My Soul

又是一首抒情的小品，歌曲旋律是引用傳統 Welsh 搖籃曲，加上唱詩班優雅輕吟的合聲
，有著撫慰心靈的安全感。Jon 又再次展現像 "A Little too Far" 那般的美妙，簡單卻
又深植人心。

Heal my soul

主阿，治癒我的靈魂吧... 多麼虔誠的呼喚...

15. Somewhere in Time

這首歌是倒數第二首，此時 D.T. Jesus 的心智漸漸平撫，也有重新出發的動力與渴望，
從歌曲中展翅飛翔般的浩瀚交響樂便能清楚感受到，後半段的吉他 riff 也是振奮人心，
似乎為 D.T 的再出發鼓舞伴奏，聽了都替 D.T. Jesus 感到欣慰呢... 如此積極的歌是
為了帶出最後一首宏偉的終曲，我所聽過最棒的終曲...

But then the years are forgiving
If God's forgiving in kind
Perhaps we'll all find our answers somewhere in time

感謝主的寬恕，我們總會找到最終的答案。或許主早就知道答案了，時間會說明一切，最
終我們會了解...

我已經改變了，重新檢視那些我以為我知道的事情。當我飛行在時間的天際，那些過去的

16. Believe

"這或許是 Savatage 最棒的一首歌吧"，我還沒聽完所有 Savatage 的作品，但許多樂迷
已經提供了這樣的讚嘆... 這首歌的副歌其實在 "When the Crowds Are Gone" 這首歌就
出現過了，再次聽到感動更深。上一首歌 D.T. Jesus 已經找到答案，這首歌便是決心的
宣示，相信。

檢視過去種種，經歷過的、失去的、必須放棄的、揮霍掉的、流過淚的、藏在心裡的、未
達成的，一切都已經過去，不要再留戀。

我是你的方向，我是你的指引，我聽到你的盼望，我感受到你的夢想，我聽到你在黑暗恐
懼中的尖叫；別走開，緊握我的手，當你做了最後的決定，我一定在你身邊不離不棄

我只請求你　相信。





多麼深刻而且真摯的期盼，堅定的信心與相信絕對是最強大的支持，我們都一樣，需要相
信自己以及讓心愛的人相信，即使是多麼深具責任的壓力。歌曲聽到最後一首，似乎也把
自己想像成 D.T. Jesus 在唱這首歌，好像有點移情作用了，我要克制一下，不然就變成
寫人生感觸的作文了，呵。

這首歌真的很棒，是我聽過最棒的結尾曲，為這張專輯劃下完美的句點。對我來說，一張
經典專輯不需要每首歌每段旋律都好聽，太完美總是不完美，而這種能夠感動到我的東西
才是我最想要的，即使只是突然的感覺。Savatage 在這張專輯裡，音樂與意境的融合相
當搭配，也是有些歌感覺普普，像是幾首交代劇情的歌，但這都無所謂，我還是愛死這張
專輯了，讓我想一直去了解，讓我想用心聆聽，慢慢追尋，這樣的認識過程也還蠻難得的
不是嗎？

最後，All I ask of you is - 趕快把這張專輯買來聽吧!!! (前後呼應)
